i find this this (3D kingdom) (http://www.3dkingdom.org/) one of the best places to learn 3d max. they also have a v good forum to help u out :D

www.3dbuzz.com is also very good. Their video tutorials are awesome. I went from making a geh airplane from the included tutorials to making a full fledged alien.
