Do you have BT Answer 1571 on your phone line, or anything else that changes the dial tone? If so then that&#39;s what&#39;s causing your modem to fail to connect.

Also try disabling "caller waiting" services if they&#39;re active.

The laptop asks if I have those things anyway, would it not find a way around it?
I tried plugging it directly into the phone line, and that wouldn&#39;t connect either.
Im not sure if I have all the right cables. It has the power cable, and one that plugs into the phone/laptop, but that is all that came with it. I tried connecting to MSN, which was already installed, and had the same problems.

Oh, my computer connects ok with the "1571" thing.
And I dont have Call Waiting.

Well sweetie, as I said I don&#39;t know much bout computers, but is there some sort of "Connection Wizard" you could try.... or have you checked yer help menu to see if&#39;n there&#39;s a "troubleshooter" in there? :unsure:

they should be - afaik all british modems have the same RJ45 connector.

I&#39;m just trying to explore all possibilities - sometimes it can be the most silly things. I once had the 1571 problem and was tearing my hair out until it dawned on me.

Well, if you try using the computer&#39;s cable it will allow you to see if it&#39;s a faulty cable or not. The lack of a battery will make no difference.

If you want to check your modem drivers, hold your windows key down and press the break key, then find the device manager in the System Properties window which pops up. Find your laptop&#39;s modem and make sure it doesn&#39;t have a yellow exclamation mark over its icon.

I&#39;ve actually come across at least 3 different line cables for modems, but I&#39;ve only been dealing with them for about 20 years. ;)

Obviously the BT connector end has to be the same, but I&#39;ve come across ones that use different pins at the modem end. And some with 4-pin RJ11&#39;s (not RJ45), and some with 6-pin. The last modem I got even came with 2 line cords for some reason, only one worked. Worth a try though.

Whitsun weekend, this town is well packed, nice to see so many people enjoying themselves this bank holiday, And what a place to be beside the sea.
