ok, a wee bit on the background of this stupid topic. my drunk friend is aruging over the phone that if we were stranded on say a desert island we could survive on soil alone (assuming we have an unlimited supply of water) i know she is sooooooooooo wrong, but does any one know how to prove it????????? like any scientific facts?lol, stupid drunk person....

u need a certain amount of protein to survive, i don't think soil has a significant amount of protein.

Soil is nothing but crushed rocks, dead leaves and animal feces.

Plants can live in the soil true, but the soil only supplies an anchor for support and trace mineral nutrients.

Plants get their "fuel", not from the soil, but use carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air to make simple sugars (the fuel). The green stuff in plants (chlorophyll) is able to trap some of the energy in sunlight and use this to catalyze a reaction in the leaf between oxygen and co2 to make sugar.

You can, however; live off alcohol as long as you take your multi-vitamins.
