View Full Version : Painting The Inside Of My Case

Well, today I started work on modding an old server case that i had lying around, cleaning it up and changing LEDs and painting, standard stuff, but thought it would be quite cool to paint all of the inside of the case black as well. Would this be possible? Bearing in mind grounding, earthing etc?

If not completley, then what bits of the inside would be safe to paint?

1 thing b4 you paint it...GUT IT OUT, everything, the powerbox too...then clean it very well and use METAL spraypaint...remember, steel is pourse so some parts will take more coats and longer to dry..

also, use a finish paint, so it doesnt chip

btw, LET IT DRY!! i did a tower for a friend while back, took bout 5-6 total days to die complety

Thats for the inside, right? So you've actually been successful painting the inside of a tower?

You can paint the whole thing.
Your parts are grounded through the power connectors, so that's not an issue.

You are aware that black (especially GLOSS black) is the most unforgiving color of all and every little flaw will show up? Every little speck of dust, drip or fingerprint.

No matter what color you choose, be sure to get all the crap out of the little crevices, nooks and crannies that abound in a case structure. If you don't, the pressure from the spraying will blast them out when you least expect it...

You should have done the humane thing and put it out of it's misery.

will painting the case black have any effect on the case temps?

RGX

Right, thankyou very much, I will be sure to give it a good clean, one final question

This is quite an old tower, and ive been looking at the space for the motherboard to go, it has all the bronze coloured motherboard mounting points, and a few extra holes, it should still be compatible with todays motherboards shouldnt it? ATX style?

Thanks for the help so far

Is it a ATX form factor case?
If so, you should be golden.
If not, you have some work to do.

Thats the thing, im not sure, what are the signs that it is?

Hold the motherboard up to the tray and see if the holes fit. Simple yet effective.

Well that's certainly one way to do it....

spraypaint usually comes in a can and is ready to go you need a spray gun to spray large areas, then you need paint thinner to thin the paint, you have pass it through a filter and then spray, spraypaints all in one shake and spray

sprayguns are like 40 dollars. so i think ill just get a new case lol how bout this (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-144-026&catalog=7&depa=1) case? its cheap, its black, its got 2 fan, it light up :D

do u guys know of any other cheap black case that has front panel lighting (not the hdd led and the power led) ?

Duffman
12-22-2003, 07:55 PM
why not just buy a plain old 5$ can of paint or rather paint the dvd drive over a new case

Duffman
12-22-2003, 07:56 PM
it is a nice case though

Wee question though, don't you have to make sure the paint is heat resistant an' if possible non-flammable once it has dried, something with an acryllic base perhaps.

I was going to paint my case, 'cuz I don't like the colour, but I couldn't decide what paint to buy on account of the heat, I know there's probably nothing that'd be hot enough to do any damage which'd be against the painted parts, but I still think you might want to get something aimed at resisting the rigours of hotter environments.

I just use ordinary matt black spray paint, available from all good diy stores, oh but I use plain white primer first, gives a nice matt finish after a few coats, and dries pretty quick as well, suprised me

would this do? (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CGE69/qid=1072125317/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-1546488-1843354?v=glance&s=home-garden)

btw, would i have to take off the current coat of paint in order to apply this? or do i just overlap it?

Duffman
12-22-2003, 09:45 PM
that'd work i suppose and you don't have to take off the old coat but its recomened, for a better finish with less chance of cracking

i think im just gonna paint the front panel plate on the burner instead of the whole case...

heres (http://www.misterart.com/store/view.cfm?store=003&AID=10273655&PID=177778&SID=107212656668643863&group_id=7765) the paint color for my case.....what worries me is the EXTREMELY FLAMABLE part....but this is the front panel plate of the dvd drive so it should be anythign dangerous right?

everythings flammable, you need a match not 95 degree temerature to ignite it though :flame:

The warning refers to the spray can itself.
As delivered, the can is explosive due to the fact that it is pressurized and contains many solvents.
As the paint dries, the solvents evaporate, leaving you with a fairly benign coat of material.
Nothing in your case ( and this includes your HS) gets hot enough to be an issue to a properly applied layer of paint.
A car standing in direct sunlight gets much hotter.

:'( I'm not allowed?

@Clocker, some stuff like, say an ink-spray'd flake in higher levels of heat, it wouldn't combust or so, but it might not be so durable in a comp.

It's not the most common type of paint, but it shows that not all paints are suitable. :) Inky-stuff is sometimes used at factories to paint stuff on crates and such, I just happened to have some myself, but I checked it and it didn't seem suitable.

Car paint is probably ok though, though I'm not sure it's flexible enough for my comp, seeing as how the covering is one big metal piece which tends to spring a bit when you open it. :)

Oxygen supports combustion, but it does not burn.
