I recently downloaded - Return to castle wolfenstein
i unzipped it with no problems to my HD
but, when i try to play it my monitor switches on and off a couple of times and then gives me the message - GLW_StartOpenGL () - could not load OpenGL subsystem
Can anyone help me with this problem
thanks a lot

The most probable cause is that your vid card drivers are out of date. You need to go to the manufacturers website and download the latest ones. They should include the latest OpenGL drivers with the newest vid card drivers, but read the docs to make sure. If it doesn't say, try searching their site for them. IF all else fails, send an e-mail to tech suport (are we still in warenty?) I had the same prob when I first tryed to play Quake 3. The good news is that the drivers are free, need to be updated anyway, and if your card was made since 1999 ( we hope so  ) it'll support OpenGL.

There used to be a prog you could download from the OpenGL site that would check your system and get you the best OpenGL drivers but I can't find a link now. Their site is http://www.opengl.org

Maybe someone else will know. WickedGL doesn't support Return, or at least my version doesn't. Hmm... Yer best bet is to update your vid card drivers, though. That should do it.

i dont think that could be.....what video card you have? cuz the most probable thing is that you dont support opengl...at least the version RTCW has...

Anything is possible, but as far as I remember from when I had this problem, OpenGL works on Win9x and up and all vid cards since roughly 99-00. So many games are based on the OpenGL API's that all the top manufacturers have adopted it. I did some research since playing Quake 3 was a top priority at the time! :D

Now it may be that he doesn't have the drivers at all, but I'd almost be willing to bet that his GL drivers are out of date. You might want to check and make sure that you have the latest version of DirectX installed. Though usually if that's to old the game installer will tell you....usually. It also shouldn't have much to do with the 'OpenGL subsystem', thats usually old or bad drivers not allowing the system to start.

At any rate, whether I'm right, wrong, or pissing in the wind, I wish you luck.

:D Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Im about 95% positive that the problem is caused by having the hardware acceleration turned down. Go to control panel > Display > Settings tab > Advanced > Troubleshoot. Turn the slider all the way up to full acceleration. Opengl requires this to be used.

All games based on the Q3A engine require OpenGL to run. Make sure you have the correct drivers etc as stated above. I'm not really sure, but I read somewhere that OpenGL was a totally different system to DirectX for some reason. Not exactly sure though.

Once again I find myself saying "Thanks, link!" This could get to be a habit. :P
And nod to the great Abu and the stupendous mad cat. I didn't think of those....

And yeah, cat, I think OpenGL is the main vid/display driver for the game. It accesses DX for a straight shot at the vid card. 3DFX was a major force behind it all with a special nod to MetaBytes WickedGL. I forget the details...damn CRS......

No problem, still waiting on skylark's reply though. Hope it worked.

i'm having the same problem. here's wat happened. b4 my computer crashed, i could play opengl games (q3 engine based) like star wars jedi knight 2: outcast, quake 3, medal of honor, etc. i was playing these on winxp, i remember when i upgraded to winxp i couldn't play opengl games. i did something but i forgot, all i can remember that far back was i downloaded the latest drives for my video card (nvidia) and got myself a copy of gldirect software, i did something that made the opengl games work with winxp. now my computer crashed, i fixed it, re-installed xp and i'm back to that problem. i can't run mohaa (medal of honor: allied assualt), gives me that opengl problem, the thing is, it gets to the main menu, then when i go to missions, and click on a mission for it to load, it loads like 1% and then crashes back to desktop. i've tried messing with the gldirect settings, no effect. can anyone be kind enough to help me, please :( ? i've got the latest nvidia drivers (53.something), and gldirect. thanks for any help guys.

Theres a website where you can find actual OpenGL drivers I think.

Give me 10 minutes.

http://www.opengl.org/applications/installing.html#9

Get OpenGL 1.5 from there (I think its 1.5) and then try.

it's a nvidia geforce2 mx 100/200 32 mb (ya, it sucks but it runs any games that use quake 3 engine perfectly and smoothly at their highest settings, i even got doom 3 to work :D ). i'll get the opengl drivers and let you know if they worked, and maybe your right, maybe older v/c drivers will work, i'll give it a shot. anyone know where to download older nvidia drivers at? and if so, which ones? i appreciate all the help you guys, thank you, and have a happy new year, i know i will :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

44.03? ill give it a try, thanks. doom3 can be a pain to run, make sure your virtual memory page is high, and tweak the cfg like a muthafu**a! it took me a days worth of tweaking before i got it to run smoothly (and by smoothly i mean 8 fps average, 2-3 fps while shooting, good thing is it never crashed or went to 0 fps or froze at any point in the game :D ). but i dont have doom3 anymore, 3 reasons: 1) couldnt sleep at night knowing the horrors that were on my computer (ironically, the computer was next to my bed) 2) too much system resources eaten up 3) id rather wait for the finished product rather than this alpha :)

EDIT: i just realized how much of a contribution ID and John Carmack have given and done for the gaming world, shit, without them, we would still be a couple years behind with our duke nukem 3d games B) . good old ID!

Here's a link for getting some drivers, vid card or otherwise.

http://www.driverguide.com/

Just sign up (free), login, and start searching. Check for OpenGL while yer there, hell, you might get lucky!

If you have no luck there, try http://www.google.com of course. There's plenty of sites to choose from.
