What exactly is a codec and what are the codec packs that used to be found on this site? what are they for? where are they now? whats the latest version?

it stands for compression/decompression

they allow you to playback movies divX, Xvid etc.

is there any reason i need to dl it? how do i find out if there are certain types of fiels that i cant play now and that i will be able to play after dling the codec?
