ok, i'm new to this prog, so bear with me & my n00b questions :)

boot magic cant be installed on an ntfs partition (according to the users guide)
my primary is an ntfs and recovery partition is fat32
recommends a fat16 partition
so just create a fat 16 and install it there?
is it that simple?

if any one else uses partition magic/boot magic help would be greatly appreciated
wanna get this set up w/o having to hit the panic button and recover the whole system :P

i used to dual-boot my system, and i found that boot magic wasnt very good, also, just let windows take care of managing the partitions. when you fire up your comp, it will ask you which OS you want to boot to, so theres no need for boot magic. :)

I'm guessing that you want to manage XP home and XP pro. You can't do that with the NT loader from windows. You'll get serious corruption and crosslinked files.

You need to find a server boot manager that will work with NTFS.

I agree, boot magic sucks. It's a very bloated and agressive program.

There's a few things you can do to make XP and XP work together but it's a lot of work. Some serious partitioning will be needed.

Best plan might be to just shrink your existing OS partition as far as you can, move it all the way up, and create a new primary active NTFS partition to install XP pro on.
Rename the boot.ini and NT loader from the old OS - add the extension .old to each so it won't attempt to boot or load.
Install XP pro on the new partition and then import any saved information from your old OS if you need to.

If things don't go well, just delete the new partition, move the old one back down and set it active, and remove the .old extensions to make it bootable.

I used boot magic for a while. I could never get it to work properly.I gave it it's own fat partition andit was fine but it kept hiding it's own partition, so i could never configure it to actually boot more than one OS.
I wanted to dual boot Linux and Windows XP. I found it much easier to just use an XP installation disk to partition the drive, format and install. Then use a Linux Installation disk to format and install on the unused space, and I used the Grub Boot Loader from the Linux installation disk.

I'm assuming your recovery partition is a logical partition.

Why would you want to use bootmagic anyway is it to install another OS, so you can dual-boot?, if so you can make the other partition a FAT32 and install your OS there with BOOTMAGIC.

didnt mean to abandon the thread,
but had some serious errors to clean on the pc
right after i tried to create a FAT partition :unsure:
(which it didnt successfully create)
basically had to reinstall windows :o
then clean all the OEM crap out, so it was an all day task

anyway, yeah it was to try out xp pro,
but givin up for now, got a buddy whos got an old gateway
hes gettin ready to dump, maybe i'll use it for a guinea pig :P

make a long story short, think i'm done with PM/BM :)

you should always ditch OEM shit. and fresh install an OS that didnt come from them. and install OS's in order. from old to new, for a dual boot, and let your bios handle the management of them.

well, yeah, in a perfect world :lol:
this is my first pc and a learning experience :lol:
besides, all that gettin rid of OEM shit helped me get used to gettin around my pc
well, the first couple of times it did, now its a pain in the ass :lol:
thats why im checkin into a new os :D

If your recovery partition is a primary partition (and still FAT32) you can install BOOTMAGIC on this.

yeah, it said it could install on FAT32, but may have some probs
reading/recognizing something or another :unsure:
recomendation was FAT16 for no errors, but f*ck it anyway, i uninstalled it :P
