Why Does 700mb Means 735mb

I Download a lot of movies but these are space consuming for my harddrive.
I don't have a lot of space left so I want to burn them on a cd because I don't have the money to buy another harddrive.
Now the following happens. When I look at the properties of the movie it says filesize is 700mb. That's great?!!??! I can put it on a cd?!?!
Not.....
When I try to burn it with nero and I put in box for burning. The size on the cd increases ( for example to 735 mb ). This I cannot burn on a single cd.
Why is this happening.
I do not want to burn them as a vcd or something. Just as a data CD, in the format it is in originaly, is fine.
Is there a way around it.

Well, first you make sure how big the files actually is, because 700 MB is not 700.000 KB.

1 byte = 8bits

1 Kb = 1024 bytes

1 Mb = 1024 Kbytes

1 Gb = 1024 Mbytes


So is your file 700 Mb or 700.000 Kb?


Then about the 80 min CDs. You can put on a 80min CD around:

736.100.000 bytes ~ 718.800 Kbytes ~ 702 Mbytes

Thanx. I understand how it works now.
But now another problem has come up. I tried to find the answer in this forum but I cannot find an answer i can work with.
When I try to burn one of these movies with Nero I always get the message that the cd isn't big enough and it pops out of the recorder.
For example I have a film wich is 738.019.328 bytes big.
So if I want to fit this on a cd that has 738.019.328/1024/1024 = 703,83 MB of space. If i read the information about my empty cd in NERO it says it has 703 mb's of empty space. Just a little of 1 mb short.
But I always get the message the message and the cd pops out.
I've enabled overburning to 90 minutes. Try to burn it with:
-no multisession
-close disk
-disk at once
This on a lite-on ltr-48125w ( which is capable of overburning )
What goes wrong? Is overburning only possible if the cd is 90 minutes?

You can overburn any CD not the just 90 minute ones. Take out the credits, that should make it small enough to fit on the CD.

There also might be a problem in that a CD needs a certain amount of space for its filing system, TOC or whatever. So you need more than just the space for the files.

You shouldn't overburn in max speed either. Reduce recording speed to 6x or 8x, if possible.
