HEY I JUST GOT ALL OF MY NEW STUFF :D

First question I have...how many fans can I plug into ONE power supply connector? Like how many before they dont have enough power?

Mr. Elmo

shouldnt the molex connector for the fan have another output?

so as much as you want

EDIT: just reread your question, as many as you want becuz fans dont use up taht much power.

clocker's a beast in messing with his air cooling. he spends so much effort to make his case sound like beehive with bees on steriods. lol. i'd just go the easy and effective way by installed a wc system. i don't get clocker sometimes.

Mr Elmo answered my question. I have 5 fans and 4 places to put them. I have plenty of molex connectors and a 500Watt PSU. I was just making sure that I could fit alot on there...Thanks! Also..I used automotive tubing to put almost ALL of my wires in...which I will put a pic of when Im done...this wont hurt my comp will it? Ex....MELT!

the tubing isn't hooked up to anything that generates heat. the wires from the psu don't heat up, it's the psu that does. so ur tubing won't melt.

Mr. Elmo
12-24-2003, 10:01 PM
well if its automotive i couldnt picture how it would melt....a car engines generate a hell of a lot more heat then your comp which has 5 fans blowing in the case

put the cpu and the hsf in the mobo first, before you fit it in the case :)

edit: the plastic things are called spacers and they sit between the actual mobo and the screws, to protect the mobo from damage

Is 8X AGP alot better then 4X AGP? My friend is buying a 9800XT but just has 4X AGP..what do yall suggest or w/e...is there alot of diff?

Mr. Elmo
12-24-2003, 10:55 PM
its not that much better, i read somewhere a couple months ago that the difference is like 10fps between the two....but the technology coulda improve since i read the article so....but still, i dont think its much more then taht.

beside hes getting a fucking 9800xt, even in pci interface, itll stil handle any games at highest setting

DWk
12-24-2003, 10:57 PM
maybe the difference in fps isnt a lot..... but its DOUBLE the bandwidth the slot has..... so yea its a lot when it comes to such a powerful card (if you're gonna push it with games like ut2k4, or something with amazing gfx)

no you need the cpu in order for it to work

like the other guy says, the spacers, and i figure out what gold thing u were talking about earlier, my case has them too. but you still need the spacer, shoulda came w/ case or mobo so the motherboard the doestn touch the steel/metal/allumiun w/e on the case.

Lol I know...Ok what the hell is this?! Its screwed into the bottom of my HS???

http://www.sighost.us/members/bigdawgfoxx/hs.jpg

Can I just unscrew that to get the thermal pad off so I dont have to rub it off??? is that what thats for?

3rd gen noob
12-24-2003, 11:34 PM
the screwed on bit is not the pad, it's supposed to be there

it will most likely be made of a material with higher thermal conductivity than the material for the rest of the heatsink :)

bigdawgfoxx
12-24-2003, 11:35 PM
Ok...theres a shit load of thermal paste under it (im guessing...its white paste) <_< what the hell do i do?

Virtualbody1234
12-24-2003, 11:38 PM
Your cooler already has a thermal pad. You could use that until you get some Arctic silver.

Install the CPU, cooler and the RAM into the motherboard before installing the board. It's easier than after.

You say that there are 4 supports for the motherboard? I would think that there should be more than 4.

This is going to be painful.
Have you no instruction manual for your heatsink?
It looks stock...what does AMD say to do?

You are better off assembling the whole thing outside your case, powering her up and making sure she'll POST before going to the trouble of screwing the whole thing together.

bigdawgfoxx
12-24-2003, 11:42 PM
lol ok. VB the case came with 4 supports but there are more..i think i have 8 supports on there now

Can someone tell me how to get the thermal pad off seriously? I asked before but people were joking around and I didnt know if they were being serious.

clocker
12-24-2003, 11:43 PM
If it's a ATX form factor board there should be at least 9 screw holes/standoffs...

Edit: rub the pad off with your fingernail and then finish cleaning with rubbing alcohol.

lamsey told you to rub it off with methylated spirits

do you not take his advice seriously?

bigdawgfoxx

Clocker, it is the stock one and I read the instructions it says nothing about removing the thermal pad completely to put thermal paste

bigdawgfoxx
12-24-2003, 11:45 PM
So its liquid that I just pour onto the stuff and rub it off....?

I also read on the net that once you use the thermal pad once it melts on there and is much harder to get off so I dont think ill use the thermal pad untill i get paste.

Edit: 3rd gen...I thought methalayted spirits was some kind of drug since they said they wouldnt sell it to me lol

a cloth

don't use anything metallic or you'll scrape the bottom of the heatsink

Did you go to the Arctic Silver website that I posted for you and read their advice?

bigdawgfoxx
12-24-2003, 11:53 PM
Yes I went to their site and read everything, however I couldnt find how to get a thermal pad off. It just showed how to put the paste on which is way more complicated then i thought it would be lol...let me go try to get this shit off..im guessing i shouldnt let the alcohol run into the other paste on the hs right?

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 12:05 AM
Ok, I think I was successful. I got the whole pad off and then rubbed it vigorusly to get everything off. I can still see a little square if i look at the hs juuuuuust right...but thats not comin off fo sho...thanks for the help guys!!

Damn...If I would have just thought to get some artic silver I would have my Computer running by tonight. but nooooo

adamp2p
12-25-2003, 12:24 AM
calm down there big dawg! Take your time...I am curious why you are messing with the HSF already...I thought all you were trying to do now was put the basics together...I thought we understood that was the main objective at first...to get the thing up and running. :01:

Edit: and you should definatlely remove that money avatar because you dont have it anymore!

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 12:26 AM
because thermal paste is alot better then thermal pad...so i took the pad off so i can put paste

Would circut city have paste? or best buy? or would it have to be just a computer store..cuz none of them will be open tomm lol.

Also...does anyone know how to mount another fan onto a HS? I have a spare 80mm fan and I think that might help cool my processor more then this little 60mm thing

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 12:27 AM
lol i still have every bit of that money

RGX
12-25-2003, 12:29 AM
Another bigger fan? Depending on the heatsink, it may be possible to screw directly into it....whilst not pretty or up to some peoples standards, itll do :P

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 12:35 AM
Well I might be able to just screw it in yeah...but IT WONT FIT lol the fans to big to be screwed into the heatsink even..maybe glue...but i think NOT lol it would cool it off ALOT tho i bet

Plus it would glow blue :D

clocker
12-25-2003, 12:38 AM
Probably not.
If you want to use a bigger fan, the best method is to install a fan adaptor.
VB has posted a tutorial on how to make one or you can buy them.

Moving the fan away from the HS will help eliminate the deadspot.

RGX
12-25-2003, 12:38 AM
ah i didnt know the size of your heatsink....in that case, you could spend hours making a brace to support it, or do what everyone else does and lob it in a handy location of your case

Virtualbody1234
12-25-2003, 12:43 AM
They won't give you instuctions on how to remove the thermal pad. They expect you to use the pad and not Arctic silver.

You can use the 60mm fan for now. Put it together with the basics first. If you get into each detail of how you could modify you installation on the first time this will take forever.

Ask me later, after your computer has been running for at least a few day, so that I can help you with using a 80mm fan.

If you would have listened to my previous post then you would be able to be running it today instead of having to wait until you can get some Arctic silver (it's gonna be hard to find some on xmas day).

Im not installing everything, as I have no Artic Silver :( So basicly I gotta wait till after christmas to install everything and get it going..once the stores open back up. Right now Im playing battlefield lol

Psu trick? if you mean put those fans in my current computer then yes that is what i did...i dont even have the PSU in my other case because i am modding it and enclosing all of the wires.

Hey ok...I have to install my power LED connectors and my power button and all that...the power button thing has 3! pins...but the place to plug it in on the mobo only has 2 pins..does it matter which 2 i put in there?

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 04:27 AM
NVM..I figured out that they go in sideways

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 04:59 AM
along with my case came those regular wires attached to the front...ya know? Like power, powerled, speaker, all those. Well I have one that says HDD LED...but my manual doesnt say anything about a HDDLED so should I just not put it on?

Mr. Elmo
12-25-2003, 05:20 AM
if you look closely at your mobo, it should be label and it should be color coded too...at least thats how my last 2 mobo was

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 05:24 AM
no...its all just black...but it tells me where everything goes in the manual..cept that HDD LED..oh well screw it..I just left it out lol. I will post a pic of what Ive done so far.

As you can see at the bottom right of the case thats where all my front LEDs are. I know it will look tight...thats where ALL of my wires are going...im putting the fan wires in that stuff...everything.

bigdawgfoxx
12-25-2003, 05:51 AM
almost posotive its right.. every hole in the mobo (sept the ones by the CPU socket) have a perfect fitting in the screw....

Like the PCI on the board and the PCI slots on the back of the case DONT LINE UP!

Mr. Elmo

Are The Cards seated to high/low.When I installed my last M-board I used those hexed shaped platform spacer screws to atached my motherboard to case like previous M-board-ended up having to remove them because the cards sat to high.
Took me 2 hours instead of 1 to put together my system o well it runs great.

All I have to say is enjoy your new system.

so, dude, are you going to get exchange the 9500 pro for the 9700 pro?

I think you should unless you need the money for a better monitor. In my personal opinion I think that the 9500 pro should be more than enough to satisfy your gaming needs.

If I were you I would save up as much money as possible for the best monitor you get. $200 should be able to get you a good 19 inch flat screen CRT.

Can I just use my 440MX untill I get my cards...or will the drivers like conflict and not work as well???

Everything will work, just check and see if your MMX 440 is AGP compliant. If so, you can just plug in into your mobo's AGP slot.

Also, make sure that Newegg actually has some 9700pro's left when you send it back. Be sure to call their customer support and make sure that they save you a 9700 pro...and get them to promise because it would be a pain in the ass if you wait all that time for nothing.

...I personally think you are a little bit nuts to be playing games on a 9700 pro with a 17 inch CRT that is not even flat...I think you should blow at least $200 on a nice flat screen CRT monitor to finish off your system.

No, you should uninstall the Nvidia drivers before installing any ATI hardware.

Download driver cleaner here (http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/), read the read me file, follow the instructions. After you run that, it should be safe to install the ATI drivers.

Hi there, bigdawgfoxx,
Do you go back to the hospital after the christmas holidays?
How come dont dont seem to know anything?
Should you be allowed to handle sharp/metallic tools?
Why not just use thermal pad? what is the problem with the thermal pad anyway?
I used the one that was on my heatdink and it works fine. P.S. pc spec= 2400xp athlon, temp 32deg. 4200gf4 128meg. 512 meg 2700 mem.
Asus K7V8X/lan/sound,(disabled, using soundblaster 5-1 live player.)
120gig ibm hdd 7200rpm,
3 case fans + two mounted on heatsink over processor = 5 altogether.(thinking about making own watercooling kit). 2xdvd+-r/rw/24Xcdrw.
etc etc etc...case, 21 in monitor, found at local council dump 3 years ago, still going strong.
Anyway, i made the same pc for a friend, and he was so happy with the performance he lent me the money to build one the same for me :) interest free :D
Have had since feb and every game i throw at it works perfectly, t3 rise of the machines, flawless, prince of persia , sands of time, like silk, nfs underground, what can i say? perfect! 3d mark 2001, (the one with max payne,) 11000+, cant remember exactly, was above 11000.
What i'm taking so long saying is that you have to just get in there, and try, or you will be forever asking someone else, the best way to learn, (some things anyway,) is just to go for it, have confidence that you can do it, pc's are a bit like lego, just follow instructions and everything should work fine, the worst thing is installing os and drivers.
DO YOU WANT TO SAY THAT YOU MADE IT?
With all the help you are requesting, what size screws? whats metal plate for? come on, you are messing about.
Surely you know rightly how to make a pc.
P.S. also fit memory on mobo before fitting into box.
If you need more cooling for processor, cut a hole for a fan in case directly opposite processor, and fit fan. :o
Cockboy, not gay, ok?

are you waiting for it to arrive? thats gonna be a long wait, cuz of christmas and the weekends....y not just run to your local comp store and grab some generic one and use it till that comes.

P.S. im thinking of adding a UV light stick to my sister's comp....it already have a blue cathode, but if i get tired of the blue one, i could use the uv one w/ the uv reacting fans and round cables.....

One thing that I think is particularly rediculus is the fact that some members of this forum feel insulted by other members of this forum and call each other names such as "spammer," etc. and other members react as if someone physically injured them,

Has it ever occured to you that it means nothing what some random person on the internet that you have never met and will never meet said something negative about you?

The only reason why I participate in threads on this board is because computers are a hobby of mine and I learn a lot from the (more knowledgeable) members of this forum. Those of you without any knowledge, I simply ignore entirely.

Take an old 486 apart and rebuild for practice, if you can do that, pc's of today are a gift.
Auto processor speed, hdd autodetect, onboard sound, lan, firewire and usb, all pc builders friends, just watch that feking bios, it can bite you on the arse for one wrong setting, if your pc wont start after a bios setting change, the only thing for it is to remove the battery backup and them redo all your bios settings again, leaving out the one that caused the problem, generally trying to overclock more than 25% does that.

Thanx DWk, people seem to think that making a pc is hard, not a bit of it, common sense, and the right tools +pair of balls = new custom pc!.
Take an old 486 apart and rebuild for practice, if you can do that, pc's of today are a gift.

Cockboy, not gay, ok? OK? No I mean it!

just reading the manuals would do...unless you cant use a screwdriver :frusty:

How could be asking what screws are the right ones, if they are too long, its easy to recognise, the screw will stop going in !
If screw is wrong threads, you will have to exert excessive torque on screwdriver, also easy to diagnose.
Just go slow, try screws in hdd and cd drive before fitting, and keep seperate from others, hdd screws are generally shorter than most others, the mobo screws look more like the threads on a bolt, wereas the screws that hold the drives in, case together, look more like wood screws, with bigger, steeper threads.
P.S. I did mean loonybin, or did you just break out of broadmoor?
I wish i still beleved in Santa, as would have liked a widescreen tv from the fat beardy ba***rd, also a nvidia fx or ati 9xxx, I have been good all year, holding the door for old ladies, then giving in and letting them out, stopping to let other feking drivers pull out from sidestreets, even though i doubt that those c**ts would do same for me, aaarrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, I try my best to understand, but it still makes no sense to me.

Who the hell cares, or checks, or notices freaking post count?

I have never once thought of such a thing (to base anything on post count). What the hell does that mean? Who gives a shit about post count? You need  if you think that big dawg gives a shit about post count. I think big dawg wants help building his new computer and he realizes that it is pointless to go back and edit a post because members such as myself are not going to reread the old thread when it is supposed to be constantly updated. The only valid reason for editing a post is to fix a typo, IMO.

Those of you who think post count matters seriously need a life and should try to get out more because Internet forums such as this should hold very little significance in your life. <_<

I dont think I could get my card up that high..it just has a small heatsink..I do have 3 fans blowing right on it though..but still thats a HUGE increase...but thats what the software says its at.

Your right on this, Your best piece of hardware is only as good as your worst piece.

MY MX 440 in my signature would blow away a 9800XT in your Celeron setup Dawg on alot of tests, because your CPU/Ram are killing your scores.

Hey big dawg, as I was reading around on the internet I found that the newer bartons have their multiplier's locked, so I think that yours will be too. So what will you do then? Yah I know the multipliers are locked.
Actually, you don't know that at all.
You're assuming that your chip is hot off the factory floor in Malaysia when in fact it's probably much older.
I've seen how you can read the code on the chip to determine it's week of manufacture...if you're curious you might do a google search and find out if your Barton is locked or not.
If it is you're going to need to unlock it before you can OC at all, because just upping the FSB doesn't give you many options.

bigdawgfoxx
12-26-2003, 06:51 PM
hold on what? Its at 11 multiplier stock and people have just put it at 200X11....what do you mean it doesnt give me many options???? I can just up the FSB like 3Mhz at a time..what the diff between that and moving the Multiplier

Whats the diff between 200X11 and 183X12???

And it appears that the L1 bridges on my card are defenintly NOT cut...so I can adjust them. BUTT at the bottom of the page it says if your serial number is above a certain number then it probably is locked or something...and my serial number is above that..so one way i can adjust them and the other i cant.

on the L1 bridge?? Im talking about my barton man lol.

Whats the diff between changing the multiplier and the FSB..I wouldnt think it would matter which way you did it but 2000mhz is 2000mhz..but clocker acts like its not.

Also..when I was taking my CD-RW out of my old computer to put it in my new one.. I noticed that it had a cable running from the soundcard up to the cdrw drive....do I need that cord for anything or what?

Also, what exactly is a post...isnt it a beep when you turn your computer on and everythings hooked up?

And one more thing..theres another cable on my PSU that is kinda like the one I had a question about at first...but its longer...and i dont think it fits anywhere..is that correct? whew I think thats it.

BTW I shot that squirel right in the head..im a fucking good shot without a scope too!

DWk
12-26-2003, 10:56 PM
i think FSB has a limit..... (not to mention ram has to be able to keep up...) and multipliers dont...

Mr. Elmo
12-26-2003, 11:02 PM
are you seriously planning on ocing if you didnt know that? like dwk says, the amount of fsb you can raise depends on your ram, while multiplier doesnt affect anything.. 250x11 =2750, but your ram has to be able to go at a extra 50mhz but you have good rams so....but if its multiplier, then it could be 200x14= 2800 and your ram wont be affected

lamsey: "methylated spirits and a cloth"

the next day

bigdawg: "should i use a knife or a cloth"

Hey 3rd gen ol' pal, its good to see you lay it down like that every once in a while...

...have you played NFSU yet? It is quite addicting! Not as fun as MC2, but the graphics quality is excellent!

edit: DWK, I have finished I think 75 races. Gonna go back to the game a little later today.

i'm not really a huge fan of nfsu, although i do have a rather nice skyline (i had a pic hosted on uploadit.org, but it seems to have been taken down now)

i'm stuck on race 95/111, but i've not really tried to beat it

i do prefer the gameplay of MC2, but the graphics in NFSU are stunning

Grand Prix 4 remains my favourite racing game though :) (well, on pc anyway)

Dude, don't take 3rd gen personally there. I think he is just trying to teach you a lesson. One of the most genuine cats around this blue land.

...oh, and I don't think he knows what a hickland Texas is. Just stop shooting animals, dude. My personal belief is that you are shooting animals because you arent getting enough pussy (and you should 'cause girls are only 15 years old once. By the time those girls are my age they have been aroud...give them something to remember...)

radeon 9600 pro

the cable from your sound card to cd drive is for analogue sound, you most likely won't need it

to get a display of your current frames per sec when playing a game, try a program called Fraps :)

FINALLY GOT AN IMAGE TO UPLOAD! Hope ya like the looks I had a cathode too...but the cathode made it to where you can barley see the fans, and it was like light blue...tha fans look much cooler. However, in the pic if it has a cathode the whole computer is a blue glow..its soo awesome..but thats only in the pic...

Hope you like my pic and thanks for all of your help!

P.S.- I know it looks UV reactive kinda on the pic, but thats just the webcam, its not.

How do you do UV reactive? Do you just paint parts of your case with UV paint and then buy a UV cathode and it all turns that cool UV color?
