View Full Version : Port Scan?

My firewall keeps blocking port scans from 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3. I think these local IPs, right? Does that mean there is a trojan or something on the other computers on my network. Sygate blocks the IPs for 10 minutes, as soon as 10 minutes is up it happens again. Is this anything to worry about?

your isp regularly monitors all of their subscibers. they do in fact log everything you do online and there isn't much you can do.
go to www.ipmonster.com to learn more.

Just ignore them. All its proving is that your firewall is protecting your computer.

Don't think its my ISP cause it just started happening today. My PC is pretty secure I'm not worried about that, it's the other ones that I dont know about. I know my dad isnt worried about security, he doesnt even have a firewall and doesnt update his virus definitions as often as he should, so I'm thinking he has a trojan that is scanning our network. Could this be the case or am I just paranoid?

You have every reason to be paranoid. Something is up if you keep getting scanned. Just have sygate permanantly block the IP's, and get your pops to install a firewall anyway you can.

how is your network configured? do you get your internet connection from your dads computer(the "the gateway"), or are you using a router? If you're using a router than the "trojan" in you dads computer cannot "see" your computer. so your computer is not at risk. either way, if your dads computer has a trojan(THIS IS NOT A VIRUS) than you should get on it and fix it for him. otherwise it will potentially cause him alot of headaches.
if you are using a router than you don't need a firewall since the rest of the internet sees the IP address of the router and not any of the computers connected to it. it would take a herculean effort by a hacker to get into you or your dads' computer. and frankly they don't care about breaking into a home network. ain't nothing there worth it.
think of it this way. your router is like the front door to an apartment building and each computer on the network is like the individual apartments.
the number 1 way a person gets a trojan is by downloading or opening attachments from unknown senders.

don't worry about it dude, i get port scans and other kinds regularly, most come from other kazaa users when they are scanning your files and stuff like that.

i use norton internet security and it automatically blocks these users for 30 minutes. nothing has ever happened yet so I'm pretty sure nothing bad will come of it.

also if you ever do suspect someone has actually gotten through just shut it down immediately.

also its good if your isp supports a dynamic ip address.

If you use Zone Alarm or a Firewall problem on a LAN, make sure it is configured so that it allways allows each IP of all your computers on the LAN to have connection. Check the Log file and see if it's blocking the computer's ips on your LAN first. You can add an IP range if you have 4+ computers (ie. IP xxx.xxx.1.100 - xxx.xxx.1.104) Firewalls tend to block what they are not supposed to sometimes..g/l

as long as your firewall picks up the port scanning, and if its a good firewall it will block it

but it sounds like its just a common scan or just network sweep of ping < checking which computers are a live or respond.

When I set up a firewall, I always permit 192.168.x.x. Most firewalls now do that for you, anyway, since those ranges are reserved for LAN machines. I'm guessing that your computer is 192.168.0.1, and you have two other computers on the LAN.
