Hey,
ive downloaded some of this video file and i preview it and i only want the the first few minutes or so, is it possible to do something with the .dat file to use it as a video file.

Yes, it is. Either change the .dat extension to an "movie" extension (i.e. .avi, .mpg, .mov etc.) or lunch K-Dat, right-click the movie, from which you want the few minutes, and click "Extract Data->Good Blocks: Only First"
