View Full Version : Difference Between Emule And Edonkey?

I'm a noob to this neighborhood, i'll admit it. I tried using Emule, and was really happy to find a file that I could not find anywhere else, but hit speeds of 10kb/s or lower (even after configuring firewall/router, and getting a high id ranking). So maybe I'll try Edonkey... but whats the difference? Is one faster than the other? And lets toss Emule plus into the mix... based on personal experience, is it faster than Emule?
Thanks for any info.

edonkey isnt gonna do anything to improve your speeds. Only install ads/spyware.
Check the faq for emule on this board for some tips to improve dl.

Ok, checked the link... screw Edonkey. Right now I'm trying Emule Plus, hoping that the speeds will be a little better. I already read through multiple FAQs on Emule, and adjusted connection settings/router settings. Same deal. It seems like it would crawl up to 10 kb/s and then fall again. Is this why they say "you need patience with emule"?

Thanks for the reply

emule - open source
- no spyware
- consumes more resources than edonkey
- no horde downloading
- no ads
- no $20 pro version

edonkey - closed source
- you have to uncheck 4 boxes to avoid getting spyware
- consumes less resources than emule
- has horde downloading
- ads run in the top right hand corner. they aren't very intrusive
- there is a $20 pro version

Thanks for all of the replies. I guess I fall into the category of "people with the wrong idea of Emule". I was expecting super fast speeds right off the bat, but it ain't going to happen. Part of my problem was that it was a rare file, and for the most part, I was "waiting" to connect to others (waiting in queue). So in turn, I was downloading from about 5 users max at a time.

Thanks for all the tips/tricks and other info that you guys supplied.

Quick question. I'm using eMule v0.30e at the moment... However, does eMule Plus contain any ad/spyware or any other nasties?

there is no spyware in emule plus. all software available for download at sourceforge.net (http://sourceforge.net/) is open source and spyware free.
