can dvd player play WMV/ASF files?

What do you mean by Dvd player?

You mean like a home enterainment DVD player? If thats the case then it would depend on the DVD player, depending on what kinds of DVD's it can play, and what formats it can play.

If your talking about software DVD players on your Comp, like WinDVD, or Cyberpower DVD, then it too would depend on the program, although if your ARE talking about software DVD players, then why just not play it on Windows Media Player? The WMV formats atleast?

im talkin about home entertainment dvd players, and i wana watch it on my tv, coz my comps not really in the right spot to bestle down and watch a 3 hour video and i cant seem to connect my tv to my comp so i thought dvd player would be good. But does it generaly work on most dvd players?

Mind trying to find a link to your specific DVD player? Or just what model number it is, company, something to help me find a site for the DVD player, maybe dig up some info?

i dont htink any dvd player can play wmv or asf....its just mpeg

Thats what I was thinking, more over because his DVD player is also touting the abaility to play 'Video CD's.'

it can play vcd's ive tried that and it works fine and i use nvidia.

I was just curious and wondering if your Video card has an S video port on the back of it, because then atleast you could plug your DVD player in . :D

no. WMV is a variation of Mpeg-4, and most players only support MPEG-1 (VCD) or MPEG-2 (DVD/SVCD). the players that do support MPEG-4 can only play DivX, XviD, or files that are compatible with those formats-- WMV is a product of Microsoft, so they would charge a license fee (and prolly an expensive one...) to use their technology in the players.

compared to DivX/XviD, WMV displays lower quality at similar bit rates anyway. you're better off just sticking with MPEG and AVI files. if you really have no other option because the material doesn't exist in other formats, you could use TmpgEnc to convert to WMV to VCD-format MPEG...

Ive seen a few players that support all run of the mill formats including WMA that arnt particulaly expensive, you'll have to look for one that specifies that it does.
