Burning Movies To Work With Dvd Player

I know this is a n00bish question but how do I burn movies (avi's / cd-rs) to work on my dvd player I know my DVD player is compataible with the discs because previous things I've burnt works but now I get 'Unknown Disc' come up.

Anyone help?

I burnt a low quality film to a cd-r 'Jackass the movie' but when I try and burn avi's it don't work.

covert it to vcd or svcd then burn it with nero
after you get the hang of it, try kvcd, you can fit the whole movie on 1 cd
