are the popups coming from "windows messenger service"

If so you need to disable this service

check this link (http://www.nbc4.com/technology/2618079/detail.html)

Hmmm...solve 2 probs at once. Get Zone Alarm Pro. Great firewall and a damn good pop-up blocker. I stopped using IE6 because of pop-ups. Now I can use it again. Even the loaded-to-the-hilt pop-up-form-hell site astalavista don't pop me any more. Or try analog-x pow. It's freeware and it works.

And yes, my dear children, the pop-up sharks are alive and well and hungry for surfer meat!!

sygates an excellent firewall, but you have to block the messenger
for it to block the messenger, make sense?

you gotta block it in your applications rules,
there that made more sense :D :P

and disabling its a good thing too
i got it blocked and disabled :)

Wanna know what I'm using? A combination of 5 seperate programs.

* Ad Muncher (http://www.admuncher.com/) (I swear by it. My favorite everything blocker to date)
* ZoneAlarm Pro with Web Filtering (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_zapwwf.jsp) (For PG IP database blocklists)
* Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) (Cleans computer of Spyware)
* SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) (Goes hand-in-hand with Spybot. Prevents spyware from being installed on your computer)
* Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/products/products.cfm?ProductID=155&EID=0) (Keeps real nasty spyware and viruses at bay)

Unnecessary? Maybe. But I never see one ad, popup, virus... basically anything that I don't want on my computer... ever.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I hardly ever use IE. For browsing I use Mozilla Firebird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/), and for email, I use Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/).

That program seems just as obtrusive as a regular ad/popup:

Clicking on an "E" icon will open blocked popup
