 I can get the TDK 8x Burner for $160 now, and am about to go get it.

But DVD burner technology is still kinda new.....they have alot to learn about it I figure.

What do you all think? What are your experiences with them so far?Are they worth getting now?

 Maybe I should just get a bigger Harddrive instead of a DVD Burner.I just do not know.I need a Beer.

hard drives are nothing special and im guessing you already have one.

dvd burners a fine, but slow, and the dvd discs are expensive.

Is Getting A Dvd Burner Worth It Right Now?

yes. if you can get hold of blank discs at about $1 USD per piece, they're no worse of a value than CD-R.

That's not true. They are more than just for "console games." They can be used to copy DVD movies to play on regular entertainment center DVD players.

to answer ur question FC..... NO...its not worth it..... why? because if you get one now u'll get either a 4x or 8x drive...and that suxors....wait till 16x comes out (as well as a one-format standard.... suckas being stubborn about having their own fackin dvd format)

And no I am not going to Dowload them.I only Download Music. :P

I can not make up my mind on anything to get myself.I am going to put the Money back and wait for the Technology to get better.I am sure the new 8x DVD Recoder by TDK will be $160 or cheaper later on.Hell.Like you all said.12x and 16x DVD Burners will be coming out.

I will just keep on useing CDRs.I have a 50 Pack I still need to use up anyways to clear up some space on External Drive.

One day I will have a Digital Camera and DVD Burner and I will be cool like the rest of you are.

Thanks for everything. :)

FC i have a Plextor 8 speed, and i must say it's really great. If the disk is full you can clean out 4,5 gigs at once within a few minutes. I guess you would love that

Personally, I waiting for the dual-layer burner (due out by April). I just hope the price for dual layer media will be comparable to current prices.

I'll admit up front that I don't have a burner yet, thus I have no personal experience.
I have been seriously looking into it though, and finally decided to wait.

Unless you pop for the higher dollar units, they seem to be quite finicky about the brand of media used. Blank DVDs are still pretty expensive and I'd hate to waste even one...

The two format war really pisses me off.
Either you get a dual format unit, in which case ultimately you end up with half of it sitting around unused, or you gamble and choose one or the other format.

Most of the less expensive models had pretty poor CD burning speeds and if I bought one it would be replacing my CD-RW in the case.

Since my main reason for buying one is to backup data, I think that continuing to use CDs makes more sense for me right now.

With luck, in a year or so this will all have settled down and DVD burners will be where CD burners are now.

My advice is buy one if you can spare the cash. I'm on my 2 dvd-writer already, the first cost £250 ($375) and it was a 2.4 speed, and this one about £100 ($150) -its 8 speed.

I put both on my business account :D , justified it by saying its for backing up data, even though i mostly use it to copy dvd movies  .

I don't trust cd-rw/dvd-rw for backing up important business data because of the reliability probs. I prefer to use a 120 Gb removable hard drive instead, which incidently is mostly full of dvd's and TV recordings  .

You can wait forever for the technology to improve, its better to buy whats available now and another one a year or year and a half down the line :D

i had a nice little paragraph written out yesterday to explain where i thought people were getting their facts wrong, but then the electricity went out (for a whole day) when i was just about to post.

anyway, a 4X burner does 4.37gb in about 15 minutes, 8X does it in about 7 or 8 minutes... and i don't think that suxors at all. holding out for 16X would save you, what, 4 precious minutes of your life that you might otherwise waste in the bathroom?

if you pay $1.50 USD or more per disc, you're wasting your money. dig a little deeper, online, and you'll find plenty of generics and name brands for $1 USD or less per disc.

and the DVD-RW/+RW thing is distracting, but it isn't a problem.

the main question is "what do you intend to put on the discs?", not those other nitpicks which are pretty irrelevant.

I found a deal at Compusa.. 25pack of DVD+RW (4.7gb) for $20. Hey, that's less than a buck per disk.. i went ahead and got 3... $60 aint bad.
I use the song DRU-510A.. kicks some major ass.

I think it's still worth buying one just now. I just bought a PIONEER A106 4x (old I know) for £95.00 and so far it's been excellent vfm. I have so far copied any DVD Movie I have come across (only had it about 1 week :) ) and paid £21.00 for 25 blank disks. I also picked up a couple of RW disks for £2.50 each, ideal cheap 4.7gig mini HD's. I was torn between the writer and another HD but glad I chose the writer in the end.
