Google ---> Search "What is an NFO" ---> Went to NFOrce Entertainment ---> Scrolled Down ---> Found this:

What is an NFO?
Back in the old days when the scene was a few years old, (medieval times hehe) there was no additional info on the releases.

So you had to download to see what it was. A group then decided to add a small text file describing what was in the package. You can now
read release notes, size, install info, greetings etc. The text (.nfo) files have gotten and more complex as time passed.
And today you can see lots of nice ASCII art.

Its so easy!

Ah, the wonders of Google.

.NFO files contain iNFOrmation, though they can be opened with Notepad, I like using Damn NFO Viewer (http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/4/1/4-1-35.shtml).
