Please help...

Here's my problem: I ran RegCleaner and went through my registry and deleted all the entries that I no longer had installed on my computer. One of these entries was for Freedom Security program that I deleted off my sys months ago when i first got my computer. Well, when i deleted it, it never fully removed itself from my system. Example: The program no longer worked but it still had the add/remove entry in my add/remove program list... but it doesn't have a button to "change/remove." And then obviously it left behind some registry garbage. ...Anyway, after running that RegCleaner i can't open up Internet Explorer or ANY of my folders. Folders on the desktop, My Shared Folder from Kazaa, My Computer, My Documents....nothing!! Everytime i try i get a fatal error reading something like: Could not open Freedom because could not find the "resource" folder. Try re-installing Freedom.

There's the problem. Here's what I've tried so far to remedy it.

1. Tried to do a System Restore. Won't take... says that it could not restore to my previous settings. I don't have a clue why not, but i'm betting that this is a seperate issue other then my Freedom error problem.

2. Tried a System Restore in Safe Mode. Same results as above.

3. Tried re-installing Freedom through HP Application Recovery. Still recieved error.

4. Tried uninstalling Freedom the correct way (enter safe mode and then remove through add/remove programs) Didn't work.

5. Tried loading one of my reg backups that i made through SystemWorks. Didn't work either. (I think i have a full reg backup in the My Documents folder but i can't get to it, except in safe mode and then i can't veiw any files in there, just folders)

I think that's it. If ANYBODY has ANY suggestions i'd greatly appreciate it. I've been talking to HP Support for hours to no avail. BTW - I'm on a friends computer right now so i can get your guys' help.

It basically means you messed up your computer, you can scrub your whole OS by messing with the Registry, you aren't really sopposed to Touch your registry unless you know exactly what you are doing! -I dont use the internet explorer shell, so if i couldnt open my IE it wouldnt matter, if you want to view a website type the website in the adress bar of the Windows Explorer, IE is for chumps, And if you cant open folders or sub-folders, make an EBD, boot with it , and type Format C:\ and all your problems will be solved!

Sounds like 'Freedom' has taken control of your computer. Gotta love the irony.

Anyway, since I don't know anything about that particular program this is the best advice I can offer:

1) Go to your RegCleaner/Backups folder and double-click on the most recently dated .reg file (this will restore those registry entries you removed last time).

OR

2) Continue trying to completely remove it. Run 'msconfig' and see if some left-over part of this rogue program is loading at start-up. Also look in you config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, and system.ini to see if you can find any references to it.

Erm, I guess you could format your drive. I think maybe what was being said was that if you re-installed Windows, it wouldn't help (it never does really). You'd need to wipe your drive and start again.

Does the error message mention a certain file that is messing? If so, you could do a search in Regedit for it to see where it refers to it. It might be an idea to put the exact text of your error message into Google.

If you can get hold of Norton Utilities at all (there is a copy on Kazaa) then there is a pretty good progran called "WinDoctor" that comes with it - it looks at invalid registry keys and things like that.

I've had a bit of a check on Google, but I'm afraid I haven't found much... could you post some more details - Windows version, error message, etc?

The Freedom site (http://www.freedom.net/support/) says:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The instructions below will allow you to completely remove all traces of Freedom from your system.

Instructions for Windows 98/ME

1. Make sure Freedom is closed

2. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Freedom software

3. Once the program has completed, restart your computer.

4. You'll now want to remove the Freedom settings folder. You’ll find this in either C:\windows\Application Data\or in C:\windows\profles\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\. Simply delete the Freedom folder completely.

5. The last step is to delete the Freedom installation directory. Open the C:\Program Files\ directory, and delete the “Freedom” folder.

Instructions for Windows 2000/XP

1. Make sure Freedom is closed. If you are running BlackIce Defender, please disable it (blackd.exe in the Task Manager).

2. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Freedom software.

3. Once the program has completed, restart your computer.

4. You'll now want to remove the Freedom settings folder. You’ll find this located in C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data. Simply delete the Freedom folder completely.

5. The last step is to delete the Freedom installation directory. Open the C:\Program Files\ directory, and delete the "Freedom" folder.

Note: If the Application Data folder is hidden, you’ll need to change your Folder Options. To do so, open the Documents and Settings directory, then click Tools>Folder Options. Go to the View panel and locate the Hidden Files and Folders section. Ensure that “Show Hidden Files and Folders” is selected. Click OK.

------------------------------------

if there are any steps in here that might help, they'd may be worth a go.

What i posted up above in my first post is almost exactly what the error reads (almost because i'm not on my comp. right now to actually check it out). I've got XP Home. I'm not sure what other info you might need... so let me know if there's anything else you need to know. When this problem first started i ran Norton SystemWorks and it came back clean. But now i'm having some sort of problem opening that up. (can't remember the error message on that problem).
