OK. I'm new to this.

Software applications have numbers associated with them. Visible in "About" box. That code number...entered into keygen...by sw publisher or otherwise...produces an unlocking key to allow use of the sw. Is the sw #, seen in the about box, produced by an algorithm by the computer it's being installed on and therefore unique for each computer? How does this work? If this was not the case, once an unlocking key was obtained it would work for all computers the sw would get installed on in the future.

If I am right, and each computer produces a unique starting sw code via algorithm on initial install, a code which then gives a unique unlocking key via keygen, then individual installs can be registered with the company and they cannot tell where the sw came from...that is whether it was a legitimate purchase or shared. (Download, shared original CD, etc.)

Is sw serial numbered? Can downloaded copies be transparently registered?

I'd appreciate any thoughts.

the Toad.

No that number is hard coded in the app and is the same on all 'puters it is installed on
