Quite Serious Problem [Archive]

Hello, I have quite the problem on my hands and i do not know how to explain it. I reformatted my HD, reinstalled my OS (XP PRO), and then installed my must have programs, like nero, klite, winamp, mIRC, Ad-aware, etc
Then i installed AVG and ran a scan, this said that all kinds of necessary files were viruses, i told it to repair and it said most could no be repaired, they were files like iexplore.exe and smc.exe (sygate), files that i need, i even got wordpad.exe, so i thought this may just be with AVG, i cleared my HD reinstalled my OS again, and did all the previous steps, but with Norton anti-virus 2004 instead of AVG, same thing!
Anyone know what the problem is here? all thos necessary files arent really viruses are they? and i scanned with adaware and took off the spyware first, so its not just some piece of shit spyware thing, i dont know what the problem is
any help would be greatly appreciated!

what were the viruses called??

may b the r viruses on you XP disk?? or on some or the software u installed?

Assuming it is a virus and your install disks aren't infected, it might be one of them viruses that go onto your boot-sector.

Assuming you haven't just downloaded your WinXP CD...
Run Fdisk to rewrite the MBR, re-partition, re-format and re-install WinXP again then install & run your virus checker. If you get warnings (not likely) then you have a problem with your antivirus.
If you don't get warnings (likely), install your programs with the antivirus running in the background in it's auto-protect mode.

at the moment i have over 1000 files infected with "W32.Pinfi" all but 2 repaired i think
any my XP cd is not downloaded

either way... this program MESSED UP MY COMPUTER BAD BAD BAD BAD...

its one of those very bad viruses..... anyways.

i recommend you format again....then install the antivirus first and check which file is the one infected.

what this virus does is replace any .exe in ur system with a 128kb file (thats the maximum size) and the file becomes unusable...

the way this sucka spreads is thru shared folders (the ones you share on ur network, for example). so before you do anything else, stop sharing EVERYTHING you are currently sharing.

i recommend u format again.... :)

I think the culprit may be Mirc, if you downloaded it from kazaa network. I downloaded an infected version of the client. The virus tried to infect me (PC - not me personally :lol: ), but i knew better :D . I think viruses have to get up very early in the morning to compromise my system :lol:

Re-format hard drive and re-install windows and install the AV software first. Install all the other software except Mirc and do a virus scan.

NO! this virus doesnt spread like most viruses..... this virus infected me because after a lan party (where we shared our....cough pr0n :D), i forgot to disable sharing of my drives (and the option to let other ppl in the network to edit/modify my files), and the virus JUST GOT INSIDE.... because all it does is look for sharing access where the biotch can crawl into....

went by my computer like running water.... when nero gave me the error that the application had been modify and that it could be a virus, i installed mcafee.... and unsuccessfully removed it. why? because the mcafee .exe got infected as well, and mcafee couldnt remove it because the file was being used (because i was scanning for virii) so i had to format. It was the dumbest mistaked i ever made..... now i never close my mcafee, no matter if it takes up resources or anything.... btw i've had experience with norton AV.... and i recommend to stay AWAY from it. besides from the fact of being a resource hogger, its engine SUCKS..... so i recommend mcafee (never got a virus when i had it....not even msblast....and i dont have ANY UPDATES.... im running the FIRST winxp version) or as some other ppl tell me, AVG.

i recommend let the info on your computer go, and clean format the SOB to get rid of it.

I would still leave Mirc till last, because the developer's machine could be infected, its made by a guy not a big company.

You should always keep a virus scanner running however much resource it takes, because it can stop a virus before it can do any damage.

Use Ctrl Alt Delete to shutdown the virus if it is running. It will also familiarise you with your systems normal running proccess, so you can identify anything that shouldnt be there.

If a virus has infected it will be stored within the system restore volume, so you need to delete the reference points of system restore by shuting it down on all drives and then re-starting it.

As for virus scanners, i use ontrack systemsuite 4, its less resource consuming than many other scanners. I would keep away from Norton, i've had bad experiences of it too.
