i opened up my pc to install a new hard drive which i did okay. but i noticed some dust on my fan. i think the fan hasnt been working but am nt rly sure. is dust on the fan blades normal for a working fan placed write about myu amd 2000 xp running at 1.66? and do you think i should consider overclocking.

the reason i havent as of yet is i war afriad my pc would overheat.

does overclocking incress heat by much?

thnx

if the temps are good then go OC! :)

Yes, dust on the fan blades is normal. I have always used a vacum hose thing to suck it out...i duno if thats good for it or not?? lol...but it did the job on my old one. Im sure your fan is working fine.

Clean off the dust and check to make sure the fan is working.

I would also like to say that if you don't want to have to clean your fan often then don't overclock.

what does ocing have to do with the amount of dust on the fan?

dude, go ahead and oc. but don't go too far in the first try. small increments, then check ur temps under load and idle. then continue if u want to

okay well seeing as i can feel air coming out the back quite fast and dust is normall im going to try and overclock

now i no its something like go into BIOS and up the speed but could sum1 link me up to a step by step guide.

o and how far/fast wod you reccomend. check my sig for spec and anyone know a progrma that u can oc without having to go into BIOS?

thnx again

why are you considering ocing when you have some extremely serious heating issues
70 degrees is gd for me

fan dust slows the fan down.... which means there isnt alot of air going to HS and if ur overclocking the FAN spins faster cuz it detects high temps and speeds up!

speeding up= dust

also the cpu gets hotter and if there is even a lil too much dust the temp will JUMP! ;)

(i hope im right)

Dust reduces cooling efficiency. If you don't understand that then I can't help you.

yes but u said ocing more will make ur fans dustier. how does that work? wat if the guy doesn't have a temp sensored fan? how will the fan know to spin faster when ur cpu's oced if it doesn't have a sensor? ;)

Well reread it. What it says is that since ocing requires better cooling then you better be prepared the keep your fans clean.

Also that a non overclocked system will be more tolerant to dust buildup.

Peerzyboy,
The questions that you are asking would lead me to conclude that you aren't ready to OC your machine.
You have a lot of research to do first.
Look around here to begin. (http://www.ocforums.com/index.php?s=)

Could you give us a quick...quickkk guide on how to do that..like what prob and do you just zoom in really far and put lil yellow dots? It would be appreciated...and also how do we get to use them on the forum? do we have to upload the pic?

Virtualbody1234
01-02-2004, 01:05 AM
Just take an existing smilie (download it to your drive) and zoom in with paint and you we see what's involved.

I then used Photoshop to make it's background transparent.

And yes, you can just upload it to use on the board. Try www.uploadit.org (http://www.uploadit.org)

My god, pixel art is easy. You only need to know how to zoom in and use the pencil tool and change colours in paint.

How can I make that my avatar? How do you save the movement and stuff?

And AMD is known for its awesome overclocking capabilites. That pic doesnt make much since.

It's a .gif file.

Gif files can be used exactly the same way as .jpg in your avatar settings.

bigdawg goto kazaa and download "Remove CPU cooler.avi" and then you'll understand....

i assume you dont know much about amd and intel from the past? or do you know their history?

I saved the file VB, then uploaded it and made it my avatar but it didnt move or nothing...

OHHH dwk I think I know what your talking about. I've downloaded some videos off of toms hardware that show the AMDs burning up. The Intel didnt outperform them at a higher clockrate though, It just automaticly slowed down to a crawling speed so it wouldnt burn up. It didnt have anything to do with overclocking.

yea try overclocking an amd you'll see smoke 0.5 seconds after you remove the hsf....

try it....

And what sort of idiot would decide to do that?

That's kind of like saying that Mercedes are crappy cars because they can't survive a fall from the Empire State Building.

Sheesh.

bigdawgfoxx

Thats why you keep the hs/f on. It will smoke up really fast without overclocking it. But it seems that AMD overclocks better then Intels WITH HS/F on. Which seems to be the newest fad ;)

lol clocker.... my point being was how fast an amd can burn up against intel cpu's.....

its actually not like the analogy u mentioned..... in the video (and my experience....my pentium didnt burn) the amd cpu starts burning, whilst the intel remains un-burned.... workless nonetheless.

edit - oh btw.... i HAVE an amd and have nothing against it......

Yeah, we know. But were just saying that noone runs their CPU without a HS/F on it. And that with it on AMD is known for its overclocking capabilities.

Edit: Yeah what happend to that deal where you were gona send a guy ur 1800 and he was gona give you a 2500??? lolol

its in these posts that you HAVE to say BETTER overclocking capabilities.... p4's have really nice oc'ing capabilities as well....

edit - btw...... "we know?" you are actually saying that what you think is what clocker thinks? hmmmm

I have seen the video in question.
I thought it was stupid then and still do now.

If the part was designed to work one way ( i.e. with heatsink), then what is the point of testing it another way ( no HS) and declaring that it is somehow inferior if it fails?
It's not like everybody doesn't already know that AMDs run slightly hotter than Intels.

Again- Sheesh.

Once again I will agree with Clocker. If he says something I dont agree with then I wont agree, but most of the time I do. I thought the test was quite stupid to do, since everyone does use a HS/F.

yep you are right - however, a cpu should be designed to stand certain amount of heat (more than which BOTH of the cpu's in the video take) so that if a hsf is misplaced (which happened in my case), the user still has time to realize this mistake before watching smoke coming out of the case....

i misplaced my hsf (put it a different way) on my p3....and the computer held up for a week.... then my computer started freezing and realized my mistake...

edit - btw.... fyi bigdawg, some older computers dont use a hsf....

My motherboard has a failsafe alarm which will shut the system down if the chip heats beyond a certain point.
It is in BIOS.
No need for the CPU to duplicate this function.

FYI- DWk...why are we talking about "older computers"?
Are there a lot of Commodores on this forum?
