Well, it's time for me to get a new comp, and a cheap one at it. I'm particularly interested in comps that are cheap and will be able to run doom3 and half life2 at low/medium settings. so basically i want performance overall. here's one that i found (canadian), tell me what you think of it and if its right for me or not:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=10189

from the looks of it, its too good to be true, but then again... it doesn't have the monitor, but that video card looks mighty nice!

thats an okay system i guess....but you'll save so much more money if you build yourself one...for that price im pretty sure you could get a nice monitor and some a great gfx card intead of the 5600. but if you must buy prebuilt, than i guess you could go for that...i recomend ibuypower but you live in canada

ya, i guess building it myself would be cheaper, and add a bit of a challenge (which i like). but seriously though, i have no idea which cable goes where. the only thing i've ever done that's complicated is installing optical drives, ya, just plug the ide cable in that's about it. for me, i think i should just stay from the build it yourself, cuz i'm bound to screw something up. thanks for the reply, i'll check out the ibuypower website to see if they ship to canada.

256MB PC3200 DDR Memory!?!?!?

I think you'll want at least 512.

01-02-2004, 10:58 AM
true true, but my current system has 384mb ram (256+128). so, if the mobo on that comp has atleast 3 ram slots, i can easily have a total of 256+256+128= [SIZE=7]640 MB[SIZE=7]. [SIZE=1] and i can always grab some ram for 30 bucks at any local comp store :D. if anyone knows of any other good sites that have comps prebuilt and ready to order that ship to/in canada, pls post the link. i'm not really into the customiztion of the comp which you can do online because, frankly, my budget is 1200 bucks total. oh god, only if i knew how to build a comp i'd be set![SIZE=1]

Try and match the RAM, get the same make and speed for both of the modules.

cpt_azad
01-02-2004, 11:02 AM
ya, i probably should do that. that way it will be more efficient, plus im worried that the newer mobos won't support the ram i have now, honestly, i have absolutely no idea what kind of ram i have (the 256 and 128)

If your system is pretty old I doubt that your old ram can even work with a new mobo. It might be SDRam, or might run at like PC2100 or something.

Edit: That system doesnt come with an operating system. You have to pay $130 more for windows.....

GO WITH AMD. If you buy a pre built AMD system, you will get alot more for your money.

Look at the system I built all for $650, not including HDD. It would whoop that system that your looking at.

256mb ddr sucks! im running it right now and i cant stand it, cant do much with my computer, hell, downloading something in bittorent and trying to run a game is slow enough, and i dont run any AV or firewall. i cant imagine the kind of setting id have to go to if i ran those. my advice: dont get that system, not enough memory, and way to expensive for the stuff your getting. read a little bit online and build your own. you'll be so much happier.

now i got a new mobo so i had to get ddr!

the only problem was tht it took a while to load all the programs at start up otherwise it was perfect!

theres only 1 pci slot in that thing! if your gonna go with something similar to that, get at least a mid-tower case, and go with an abit nf7 or an asus a7n8x motherboard, along with at least an athlonxp 2500+ barton processor.

bigdawgfoxx
01-02-2004, 08:22 PM
Yeah, he pisses me off recommending that small ass case to EVERYONE. Get a mid tower and an Asus A7N8X mobo.

And on the ram he says X2= $138...two of those would be around $190. And its a limit to 1 per customer...thats pretty cheap for a 512MB stick...just saw that its value ram.

muchspl2
01-02-2004, 08:37 PM
its only the second time I have recommend it and you don't have to get the same case I just have been thinking of making a small frag box type setup
its basically to show what you can get building it, thats whole point dipshit
you make it how you want now go flame some more crap about how ati is better than nvidia

so your total is 2 stfu's and 1 mind your on business please drive around to collect your change

bigdawgfoxx
01-02-2004, 08:40 PM
Ok I think he knows he can make a frag box. And he saw that price and probably thought to himself "hmm its not much cheaper"

Get the exact same stuff I got in mine..only cost me $650 without the HDD and its awesome.

stop the fighting plese :'( lol, anyways, ya thanks for the setup muchspl2. although i think, a newer mobo might be better, i heard asus makes good ones, and since it's listed in this thread might as well. okay, i found these great instruction on how to build your own comp, i think i can do it:

http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/index.htm

oh ya, and bigdawgfoxx, what's your setup that you had going for $650 minus hdd? curious, i could probably save a ton of money and get a kick ass video card and maybe some more ram. thanks for the suggestions! although i am intimidated by this "build your own computer" i was never good with building stuff, and on top of that, i'm sure i'll break something, tell me what you think of the site i posted about the how to build your own computer and tell me if it's a safe guide to follow or not. thanks again!

damn, i can't find the video card anywhere, tried ncix compusmart, i will try futureshop later, so here's the setup i've got planned:

ASUS A7N8X-X NFORCE2 400 SOCKETA AGP8X 5PCI USB2.0 ATA133 SOUND LAN - 106.31

AMD ATHLON XP 2500+ 512K 333FSB SOCKET A BARTON RETAIL BOX 3YR MFR WARRANTY - 134.06 (includes fan and heatsink)

Ati Radeon 9600XT 128MB AGP8X,128-bit DDR,S-video - 299.99

SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.7 120GB 7200RPM IDE 8.5MS 2MB ATA100 OEM 1YR - 133.27

SAMSUNG 512MB PC2700 DDR333 184PIN OEM (times 2) - 96.39*2=192.78

VANTEC AEROFLOW SOCKETA CPU COOLER TMD 5600RPM 35.5CFM 38DBA - 30.32

ANTEC 1080 PERFORMANCE PLUS CHASSIS 4X5.25IN 6X3.5IN 430W TRUEPOWER GREY - 169.50

LG GCE-8525B CDRW 52X32X52 INT EIDE ATAPI OEM W/ SW - 50.27

LG 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE UDMA33 INT OEM - 39.99

LG 17IN 700S .27MM STUDIOWORKS 1280X1024 60HZ - 168.72

so like i said, heatsink & fans, im hella confused. if i find that video card, i'll replace it with the one i have listed so here's the total with and without the videocard.

TOTAL: 1325.21 CAD TOTAL w/o v/c : 1025.22+v/c(est. 199.99)=1225.21 CAD+taxes. yikes. no prob, i can save up some more money, but hey, you guys right, if i tried to buy this system it would most likely be 1800+ bucks. any tips on where to cut down and maybe replace some parts with cheaper ones, please post the sites. and hopefully the currency u list the items (if anyone bothers to help me that is) is in canadian. thanks once again guys.

P.S. i really am more of an ATI fan then an NVIDIA, so ya, definately going for the 9700 pro.

that's not bad at all. i'm guessing it's directx9.0 opengl2.0 100% compatible? if it is, i'm sold. ati cards are a bit expensive, but they are damn good. but i've heard bad stuff about the fx series, especially the 5900 ones. is it worth it?

9700 pro, well not really 200, it's more like 200+taxes+s&h that is if they ship to canada. if not, i can head over to a local comp store and check out their prices for the radeon 9700 pro, if it's within a limit of 250 bucks, i'll buy it, if not, 5900. so the mobo i chose is agp8x, that's a relief!

whoa whoa whoa, hold up a minute. cables? do you need cables to install the card, or cables as in tv out or svideo? but otherwise, it's all good. on second thought, i don't even know y i posted, that link that bigdawg gave me didn't say it was oem. oh well, now i know what it means, could come in handy later on :P .

Yeah I know what it means. I think he was refering to like does it mean it doesnt perform as well? or maybe something like refurb, I was just telling him that it was fine and nothing was wrong with it.

The card from newegg is a retail..he cant get it anyway though so it doesnt matter.

Dude, if you have no interest in building a computer yourself, see if you like anything from Dell. They are the cheapest preconfigured computers you can get.

Dell is the best for prebuilt. There support is unmatched. I call them, tell them my speakers dont work, he ask me whats the problem, and then says, "we have new speakers on the way" ....I love their support.

HOWEVER, the only problem is that like if you change operating systems, or add ram or ANY other hardware that is not from them...you like loose your support if you tell them about it..so DONT tell them...

Clocker would love support like that!

My guess is that it would go more like this however....

Clocker: Hi! I seem to be having some trouble with my computer.

Dell: Too bad, moron. You think we can't read forums? There are pictures all over the internet showing the stupid things you've done to our beautiful Dell PC. You deserve to rot in hell.
We will never sell you another computer if you're going to hack around on it.
You will be reduced to using an eMachine for the rest of your life.
Have a nice day.
