Ok somthing has puzzled me for a while no and that is my mom has a athlon 1800+ xp palomino and I have a 2100+ xp thoroubred, and are hardware is almost the same exept mine is a little newer, like same ram and stuff but my moms computer has always ran faster with alot less slow down, so i stole her proccesor and switched em and now my computer is running faster then it ever did before. What the fuck is going on here?

Your stealing from your mom?

What does that have to do with anything? Its not stealing, its trading.

I have no clue why its faster, but I'm just saying at least talk to your mom about it...doing something like that to my mom would make me feel bad  lol

it has something to do with the chipsets...

Good question.
Felony theft, for starters.

Your determination that Mom's (ex) processor "runs faster" is based on what, exactly?

 What the hell are you talking about. I took my moms proccesor out and put it in mine and it runs faster then the 2100 ever did.

Did you benchmark it with your old one and your moms cough ;) traded one ???

Hello!

It is not just the CPU that determins system speed. It is also memoryspedd bus speed of the Mobbo, internal settings in the BIOS and ofcourse also the speed of the HD and graphic card!.

But the fact that your PC now runns faster with your moms XP1800 then with your XP2100 indicates a bad CPU. Maybe you have overheated the old one and made it less efficent as a result. Or it maybe was not cooled enough. The faster XP2100 maybe require a better CPU fan.

There is probably even more possible causes do you still have a warranty if so then you have it checked?.

NMan I can't see how it would be faster with the older Palomino core.I went from a thoroughbread xp2200+ to a Pal 1900+ when my 2200+ quit and I hate the damn thing. It runs way hotter than my 2200+ did (5-10 degrees hotter) Though I don't find it performs any worse (maybe abit slower) than the 2200+ it surely isn't better.I guess my biggest problem is the heat,if you have any way of checking temps of your system then check them out.I bet it runs alot hotter than the 2100+.

actually...there are 1800+ that are t-bred's....mine is one :o

edit - heh my bad.... its a t-bred B

CPU Properties
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 1533 MHz (5.75 x 267) 1800+
CPU Alias Thoroughbred-B
CPU Stepping B0
L1 Code Cache 64 KB
L1 Data Cache 64 KB
L2 Cache 256 KB (On-Die, Full-Speed)

I think one of the 1800+ can run at 2600+, not sure which, but you normally have to set the multiplier to run at the higher speed at the bios.

Do a benchmark of the two processors and compare the results with other 1800+ and 2100+ to see how they compare. You could either have a bad 2100+ or your 1800+ is somehow running at 2600+ without setting the speed at the bios.

Wait just a damn minute here!

Based on the meagre information from the original post, you guys are going to recommend going into BIOS and screwing with multipliers, etc., FIRST?

There are lots of simple explanations to explain why Mom's PC may appear to run better ( which is something that we don't even know is a fact, yet!).

Are the OS's identical?
Are the machines identical ( note that he/she says "almost" the same )?

The ONLY way to tell for sure would be to run the same benchmarks, in the same PC with the two different CPUs installed.

Until then I'd be careful what you recommend to fix this "problem".

uhhh not to mention the amount of apps installed in each computer + the hdd rpm....

u see, my sister's computer (a celeron 300 with like 128 ram or something) boots up to windows faster than my computer....but that doesnt mean it IS faster...

edit - winxp on both, btw
