View Full Version : S-ata Drive Installation...

i got my new s-ata drive this morning and have been having probs installing it...

i've mounted it correctly in the 5.25" -> 3.5" bracket set and have the jumper and cable correctly set up

however, i'm stuck on installing the drivers for the s-ata controller...

i've got an asus a7n8x-d so it's got an onboard s-ata controller, but i can't install the drivers for the controller as i don't have my floppy drive installed

is there anyway to install the drivers without a floppy drive or will i need to install the floppy to continue?

tia for any help or advice :)

Download the drivers from the makers website.

All files for that board: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/it...uxe&Type=Latest (http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X%20Deluxe&Type=Latest)

SATA driver: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/se...022.zip~zaqwedc (http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/selectftp.aspx?l1_id=1&l2_id=10&l3_id=23&m_id=1&f_name=silicon_v10022.zip~zaqwedc)

I suppose you could burn them into a CD if needed for the Windows installation.

3-2) Adding the SiI 3112 controller to an existing Windows XP installation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow the instructions in this section to install the Silicon Image SiI 3112
driver on a system already running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

1. Click Windows [Start], then move the mouse to stay on [Settings].

2. Click [Control Panel].

3. Double Click [System].

4. Click [Hardware] tab.

5. Click [Device Manager].

6. Right Click [RAID CONTROLLER] under [Other Devices], then click [Properties].

7. Click [Driver] tab.

8. Click [Update Driver].

9. Choose [Install from a list or specific location].

10. Click [Next].

11. Choose [Include this location in the search].

12. Click [Browse] to specify the file path where the driver is,

e.g. "X:\Drivers\Si3112"( X is the drive you put the support CD).

13. Click [Next].

14. Click [Finish].

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) Verifying controller installation under Windows NT, 2000 and XP
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow the instructions in this section to verify that the controller was
installed correctly.

For Windows 2000/XP

1. Right click on 'My Computer' icon, select 'Properties', left click
on 'Hardware' tab, and then on 'Device Manager' button.

2. Double click on 'SCSI and RAID Controllers', If there is no yellow
'! ' or ' ? ' in front of 'Silicon Image SiI 3112 Serial ATA
Controller', the driver has started correctly.

3. To view information about the devices attached to the controller,
right click the 'Silicon Image SiI 3112 Serial ATA Controller' and
select Properties from the context menu, then select the tab
labeled 'Device Info'.

For Windows NT 4.0

1. Double click on 'My Computer' icon, select 'Control Panel', click
on the 'SCSI Adapters' icon, 'Silicon Image SiI 3112 Serial ATA
Controller' should displayed correctly under 'Device' and 'Driver'
tab.

2. To view information about the devices attached to the controller,
double click on the 'Silicon Image ATA Controllers' control panel
applet. Select a controller from the list at the top of the
dialog. Then select a device from the 'Device Location' drop down
list to view its information."

i've done the installation by the instructions, but when i've finished, under device manager, there's no "Silicon Image SiI 3112 Serial ATA Controller" displayed

Floppy drive?
You don't need no stinking floppy drive.

The SATA drivers are on the CD that came with your board.
The very last file on the CD ( I just checked on mine...). ;)

i've installed those, but under device manager, it's still only saying "SCSI/RAID Host Controller" and not "Silicon Image SiI 3112 Serial ATA Controller" :(

Does it show any yellow exclamation point or anything like that in the device manager? Perhaps your drive is already functional.

Look in the Disk Management.

Start>Control Panel>Switch to Classic View>Administative tools>Computer Management>Disk Management.

Does the drive show up there?

Well there's not much I can do in BIOS I'm afraid.
Because I don't have SATA drives in my machine, when I hit F4 during start up it just says "no drives detected" and keeps on going...
I see on page 91 of the manual a section about SATA RAID configuration, but that seems to assume the use of two HDDs, which apparently you don't have, right?
I'm stumped...temporarily.

Open the Windows Device Manager to verify that the SATA host adapter is working. It should be listed under the category SCSI Controllers, SCSI Adapters, or SCSI and RAID Controllers

Is this there on your machine?

I think you should try manually installing the correct drivers, it sounds to me like Windows is using the wrong ones.

Force it to install the drivers you got from the Silicon Image website.

Don't do auto-detect, select the location of the drivers yourself and tell it to install those ones.

That will do nicely, Clocker - I assume from that that noob is using the wrong drivers, as the ones he selected were not digitally signed.

VNC is a method of remotely controlling a computer over the internet; he allowed me to control his computer directly via the VNC system so I could show him the method I meant.

You can find out more about it here (http://www.realvnc.com).

it was the SATA_EN1 jumper (just below the battery) :)

VNC is a really handy tool, it's like the windows system (remote desktop, i believe) but it's very fast

you don't necessarily need to let the viewer have control, you can limit them so they can only see the problem, but as you can imagine, it's a powerful tool in situations like these

Well, that's good to know. I was just in the process of reading the manual that I just downloaded. :)
