im lookin into maybe buying an xbox, i like the fact you can out linux on it and use it as a pc aswell, and as an all round media player, like playing divx files, which is really handy. and also dvd, but is it alot better than the ps2, and what else can i do to the xbox? and anyone here tried putting linux on it.

edit: also is it possible to fit some xbox games on a normal cdrom? that have movies ripped?

Xbox or PS2.

I think you should choose whichever you like best.

I have come to think that Xbox is big on multiplayer titles, and Xbox live is one of the Xbox strong points.

You have to buy a mod chip to put Linux on an Xbox. You can buy nice premodded Xboxes with 120GB hard drives. Search around.

There are exploits used to get around the mod though.

I agree with the online multiplay though the PS2 has it but its a pretty crap community at the mo.
PS2 can play DivX and Xvid (as well as mp3 and ogg) google PS2 Reality but you will need a modded PS2.
PS2 has a higher availability of "rips" to download but do you really want a game with most of it ripped out?
The Xbox is easier to chip, in fact theres a few no solder mods that apparently work well.
The PS2 is a bitch to chip and the no solder mods are crap (just a glorified boot disk workaround) and V9 PS2 does not accept the boot disks.
The PS2 can run Linux as well but you will need a modded PS2 and the linux kit which is a few quid/bucks as well but it does include all you'll need to get started.

Piracy aside I'd be looking at the gameplay. Graphically they are pretty close and a lot of the games nowdays are released multiformat.

For me personally I own a PS2. I prefer the controller and if I want a game thats released on the Xbox I wait until the PC port for the simple fact my PC will run it better!
Look at the games available for both and try them where you can (at you local video game store of whatever)

Now I'm taking bets in how long it takes this thread to dissolve into a series of flames. I give good odds to! ;)

I agree about the PS2 controllers. They are perfection.

I would also go for an Xbox if I was buying. I'm not sure why, since I love the PS2 controllers. I guess I just love big games where you blow everything up. And there seem to be more on Xbox.

Xbox = not many good games... but good graphics
Ps2 = Ultimate Games

so if you actually like the grapics then choose xbox but if you want to Good games such as FF Series then get a ps2....

cpt_azad agrees strongly with your opinion. no offense to any fans of the ff series, but seriously it does suck (exceptions made for ff7, i heard it's really good and played it once, i've played a bunch of other ff's and they suck ass). do your self a favour, get an xbox (but you don't have to take my word for it). more better and "Brute-force" games are coming out for it soon, brute force as in Doom3, Halo2, and Half Life 2(don't know whether hl2 is coming out for xbox, heard somewhere, but it's probably a rumour <_< ). yes, ps2 has a bigger selection of games, with more variety. xbox is pure power with graphics, sound, and some pretty amazing games, the difference? ps2 has more games period. not to mention that xbox live just leaves ps2 in the dust :P .

edit: ps2 has games that are suitable for children-teens, xbox is more into the teen-mature genre. but seriously, i don't care if ps2 has more games, xbox has games that make ps2 games look pathetic (and not just the crappy ps2 games, the good ones).

if your good at using a controller then xboxs FPS are awsome, it took me a long time go get used to not aiming with a mouse but once you get the hang of the controller you can aim just as fast as a mouse, there are some very good online FPS including: Counterstrike, Rainbow 6 3, Wolfenstien, Unreal Championship

I dunno so much. I feel like xbox games are like a beta release to the PC ports.
Its great to say that a game came out on (insert console here) but by the time it reaches another format most the bugs/glitches are ironed out and gameplay is improved.

Get a PS2 for their exclusive games
Get a Xbox for games that appear on BOTH systems and it's exclusives.
---the same game on PS2 and Xbox is better on Xbox
---Xbox has better multiplayer all around

great, another ps2 vs xbox thread.

but it depends on your taste in games....if you like rpg , get a ps2, if you like fps or real tiem rpg, get a xbox. if you like mario games, go jump off a bridge.

Well if you invest the HD and chip for XBOX then you can actually just upload a game right to the HD. You can also even run PSX and NES games on it with emu and even some PS2 games. Thing is I bought a PS2 which I was going to chip and then found out all the drawbacks of the V9 and took it back
http://klboard.ath.cx/index.php?act=ST&f=2...t=0#entry755133 (http://klboard.ath.cx/index.php?act=ST&f=29&t=89390&st=0#entry755133)

Truth is comparing PS2 too XBOX is like comparing a toy too a computer. Only drawback is you may be in around $400 for it loaded. Look at this site
http://www.premodded.com/catalog/product_i...&products_id=29 (http://www.premodded.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=29)
Notice all the SOFTWARE it comes with, how can PS2 compete with that. PS2 has a nicer controller and more titles but is truly a money pit. Though some may say all consoles are a money pit compared to the right computer. There even is some heavy work going on at the moment to even make an emu for XBOX...

i wouldnt really have alot of games for it, just a select few games a like, it was also for its portability, as a media player and a computer that i liked the xbox, i was just wanting to hear what the ps2 side had, i knew iut had a media player, but the xbox looked easyer to chip and mod etc. itll prob be a month before i get it if i do, ill just have a looka round the net see what can be done, and how easy. :D

You should wait for a PSX.

Mr. Elmo
01-09-2004, 11:20 PM
what?

but when selecting consoles, forget about the system spec, how many games it has. it all depends on the # of games that you would actually buy/download for that consoles....ppl can say that the ps2 have tons of games, but you' arent going to play them all so....

I meant wait for the PSX to come out with all its stuff, instead of duck-taping a DVD burner to your PS2.

Xbox....u can pick one up for under £100...drop in an audio exploit or modchip..and rip it wide open.. :) play import dvds, play backups of your games, play copied movies, play gameboy advance/neo geo etc etc games....you can do a lot more with it than u could with a PS2....and yeh i know some people will say..'well i can do all this with my PC already'...yeh but where can u pick up a Decent PC for under £100??? Thought so! ;)

2nd hand Xbox - £70.00
007 Agent under Fire (2nd hand) - £15.00
Madkatz Memory Card - £10.00
