Personally I agree but I like'em both.

In Basketball:
Each player has to play offense and defense. Look at Michael Jordan. He was popular for scoring as well as getting steals and getting assists.

There's a highlight on almost every play.
Just the fact of shooting a round ball in a hole not much bigger than it is amazing.
Blocked shots
Great passes.
Steals.

Basketball is entertainment overload.

Anyway back on topic
Let's go on record with picks. I've got

Rams
Patriots
Colts
Eagles

What an amazing weekend of football. I enjoyed watching every single game.

I have pledged my allege to the Carolina Panthers even though I live in Louisiana and the Saints are my home team. The gave away Jake Delhomme to stick with pitiful Aaron Brooks. It serves them right that Jake will be playing for the NFC Championship and the Saints are sitting at home watching it on T.V. Jake's parents live about 10 miles from where I do so not only me but the whole state is pulling for Carolina. Go Panthers!

Unbelievable.

You a player, too?

In my first (and only) pro tourney (1980) I got schooled by Grady Matthews in the second round.

He told me I was "pretty good" and that I should "keep practicing".

My wife and I play in a couples league where we've won top pair 3 years out of the four they've had the trophy.

The year we didn't win it, we didn't play.

I left Philly as a mere tadpole-4 yrs old.

Willie Mosconi had a parlor near an apartment my folks lived in before I was born; my Dad was playing one night when the Man walked in, and consented to my Dad's request for a game of eight-ball.

Willie racked, my Dad broke and ran out; then begged off, as my Mom had given him strict orders to be home by nine PM.

Willie was reportedly not amused. :D

Wow. I've only been playing for about 5 years and I think I'm pretty talented (I'm not egotistical though).

I've got all the techniques down but I need to perfect my masse.

I love playing for money because I have this laid back attitude while the people I play have that stern-faced-Allison-Fisher-Karen-Corr look and automatically think I'm a joke until I beat them a 'second' time. At that point they think I'm some sort of prodigy or weirdo (probably the latter) while I'm taking their money.

I don't know why I haven't tried going pro. Making music takes most of my free time. <_<

You are obviously a good player to have gone pro at all.

Damn...your pops played Willie Mosconi..isn't there a Cup named after him or am I thinking the wrong sport? I'm in my 30's so bare with me.

Would that we were close enough to play.

It's a great game; it integrates physics and geometry so neatly.

When you make an "unmakeable" shot, because you added a few "unseen" ingredients is kind of a kick to the uninformed or intermediate player.

To this day, though, I learn new stuff; it's not like anything else, that way.

And you're right as to attitude-I get comments on my game often enough, but they still make me uncomfortable, but this is because I know how quickly you can get trimmed on the table, especially if you come on like "King Slate".

I've given a few lessons (real ones), but the best advice I have is to not worry about your opponent-he (or she) will do whatever their game allows them to do, and you can't control that.

You can only control what you do, and then put your game out there against his/hers.

The better game wins-always.

I have become a better player with every loss.

BTW-I never fit the definition of a "pro", whether I played in a tourney or not.

I've played in lots of tourneys, on a regional level, etc., but not on the level of the one I mentioned in my other post.

If I had the pure ability I had then, combined with the experience I have now, maybe that would have been different, but my eyes are problematic, and I don't know if lasers can solve my problem.

Maybe someday-I'm "only" 45. :D

One more thing:

Settle for developing a "usable" masse; don't bother with the trick-shot, 80-degree stuff.

That will do nothing but bring you grief-unless you want to be the next Mike Massey or something.

On second thought....... :P

Willie Mosconi was simply the best, and for a long, long time, too.

I would imagine he has several cups named after him.

My Father's exploits were not recorded for posterity, however. :D

I met Mike Massey at the Billiard Convention. I also met Sardo of Sardo Tight Racks. They have a mini-competition for the fastest break and each winner gets a Tight Rack.

I looked up Mosconi. It's the Mosconi Cup and it's Europe vs. The US.
We won in 2003 when it was played in Vegas.

I think the reason I took to billiards quickly was actually my love for math and geometry believe it or not.

I noticed two things that separate ok players from great ones...consistency and focus. You should try the amateur circuit again. A friend of mine and her team went to Vegas to play so ya never know......... ;)

FC-

Just using pool to bump the thread during football's short sojourn.

This weekend promises more great games, I think.

Busyman-

The amateur circuit would demand time I don't have.

If I won the lottery, though... :)

You have correctly devined that which separates the great from the merely good.

The female pros provide a great example:

Two of the more self-contained pros are certainly Karen Corr and Allison Fisher; extremely focused.

Two of my absolute favorites are Jeanette Lee and Vivian Villareal; each is a tremendous talent, but don't have quite the focus of the former two-they are a bit more extroverted, playing to the crowd, etc., and this often short-circuits their effort on the table.

On the men's side, I like a couple of the new guys-Corey Deuel (kind of a "Brett Favre" player) and a fellow named Robles (out of Brooklyn, I believe) who is VERY focused.

I wish they put the guys on TV more, but the women are pretty good to watch.

Damn man I was going to bring both of them up, Jeanette and Vivian, in my last post but didn't have time.

I can tell we share the same logic.
They both take chances that Allison and Karen don't take.

For instance, the last two will play safeties when confronted with a pretty difficult shot (not all the time though) but I have seen Jeanette and Vivian screw up by NOT being safe. The crowd says 'ohhhhhhh'. <_<

That's where playing to crowd comes in. They sometimes make super trick-shots and that's just wonderful for glorys sake but in end it's rare I see those two in the championship. Jeanette was the "2001" BCA Champion around the same time Karen Corr stepped up her game.

Now everytime it's Karen/Allison.

About the guys:
They actually have trimmed down the TV time on the male side since 2001.

Now it's basically Trick Shot Magic. I'm going to try going to some matches at ESPN Zone in Baltimore. They have them there ALL the time and it's only about 30 miles away at Baltimore Harbor.

They'll be tested against the 2nd rated defense of New England this weekend. It's also gonna be in cold weather, so that could have an effect on their performance, since they are used to playing in a dome. Somehow though, Manning is gonna play another game of his life and they'll win.

Too bad you missed Sunday's game against Green Bay FKDUP74. :P
Anyway, we all have our favorites, for our own reasons. Being Philly homegrown I will always be loyal to the local teams....this upcoming game against Carolina being no exception. It's true that except for four Eagle fieldgoals in Philly's last win over Carolina 25-16 (while Carolina's John Kasay conveniently missed three and an extra point) the Panthers would have perhaps taken that one but right now McNabb is at his best, the Eagles are hungry, and Carolina will be hard-pressed to stop them.
But, with all things being said, one famous quote comes to mind..."It's why they play the game!"

the panthers should have this game.
the last meeting we had more rushing yards, passing yards, sacks and interceptions than philly.

philly is gonna have a hard time rushing the ball without westbrook. and weve proven we can stop the passing game as we did with the rams.

its gonna be the colts and the panthers in the superbowl.

lol....well FKDUP74 we have formed a triangle in location. You're in CA, I'm near Portland Oregon with Philly about 3k miles away. High-fives to my friends in Philly extend across the U.S. after each Eagle victory.

Look around though. I lived in the San Fernando Valley few years ago and the best Cheesesteak I found outside of Philly was a place called the "Subway" (but, NOT the chain you know from the tube - this was a small stand). It was a small place on Van Nuys Blvd. near Sherman Way. I recommend the cheesesteak with onions, peppers, mushrooms.:chef:
It's not uncommon to find a place in most cities that offer the cheesesteak. Especially if the owner happens to come from Philly. Find one, it's worth the effort.

However, if the urge got too great for ya, check this out here (http://www.phillypretzels.com/home.html)....http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:wPUHco-CLkcC:www.tasteofphiladelphia.com/logo2.jpg

lol...what a coincidence.
Well, I just moved here last year. Lived in Santa Clara, bordering San Jose (Silicon Valley). Took me about 10 hours in my camaro. Actually took the Tigard exit off the I-5 (another 10 minutes to Portland from there) and stayed at the Red Roof Inn there. I live in the Beaverton-Hillsboro area about 20 minutes from there. Still learning my way around.

Good luck with your job search, Oregon has one of the highest, if not the highest, rates of unemployment in the country (around 7.3%).

By the way, we're just thawing out from a winter storm that affected the entire state. Make sure you check road conditions before heading over the Siskiyou's. You'll be on I-5 the whole way. It was shutdown just last week.

Finding places to eat up here is no problem...it's a major pastime. Restaurants, Fast Food, abound. (and NO sales tax...i.e. up to 8.25% in CA).

Be ready for this...when you stop to fill up in Oregon you cannot pump your own gas. They have environmental laws forbidding it.

Here are a few links you can check out....
City of Tigard (http://www.ci.tigard.or.us/)
Tigard Restaurants (http://www.restaurants.com/US/USAlphabet.asp?Metro=PORT&City=Tigard&Quick=)
Tigard, OR Jobs (http://tigard.plusjobsamerica.com/)

Well, good luck FKDUP74. Stay safe. Watch that speed...I saw plenty of radar patrols on the way up.

Pump

"You drive up, I put my mag down
Your tank says E, been driving all over town
And I know, baby just what you need
You've got to fu-uu-uu-el up the gas tank, to move at full speed

Oh can't you see me standing here
I'm at your service to pump your gasoline
This is the New Jersey scene
Can't pump your own gasoline!

Don't touch the pump. Pump!
I'm at the pump
Full service pump. Pump!
Full service pump

Aaa-ohh. Hey you! Don't touch that
Baby where you been?
You say you don't know, from Idaho
Passing through on Route 10

Oh can't you see me standing here
I'm at your service to pump your gasoline
This is the New Jersey scene
Can't pump your own gasoline!

I'm here to pump. Pump!
I gotta pump
You cannot pump. Pump!
I'm here to pump

Tip me to pump. Pump!
Tip me to pump
My job is to pump. Pump!
My job is to pump."

What in the hell is going on?

LOL...well, it's true Funky.
No one was anymore surprised then I was when I stopped for my first tank of gas just over the Calif-Oregon border. I got out of my car and this cutie came up to me with a "can I help you?" I said yeah, I'm going to fill it up. Then she explained to me that in Oregon you have to let the attendant pump gas. "as she reached for the nozzle, she slowly bent over and I saw her skirt raise up above her thighs and....." OH HECK! that's another story.

Anyway, I can look up the why's and wherefores but trust me...it's the Law! Probably had something to do with somebody smoking a cig when they pumped their own gas and blew themselves and the adjoining neighborhood up....I dunno.
