View Full Version : Stairlifts For Dogs

My landlady, who I lodge with, has a Dachshund (sausage dog) which is getting on a bit in years. Now the poor ting likes to folllow its owner around the house and gets very upset when he can't climb up the stairs to get to her.

Now I'm wondering if anyone knows if they make dog stairlifts (like old people have), I reckon you could easily train a dog to operate one and that would solve the problem. (And stop the damn thing barking until someone carries him up the stairs...)

Any ideas?

you could try building a smaller set of steps next to the stairs that are the right size for the dog to use :01:

Or a ramp.

A board with some carpeting for 'grip'.

True-in the case of Hot Dogs
there is an Aerobics Video starring the sexy and stunning - "Desire"

Although it has the side effect of dogs tending to Lick themselves too much...

I used to help him out, but one time he bit me right near my eye when he got scared. Nothing serious just a little cut...but it was sooooo embarassing explaining to people that I got bit in the face by a sausage dog.

There was a dog shown on UK TV recently that used an ordinary stairlift. So I guess training is the answer.

I trained a dog(Pyrenean Moutain Dog) once to close the door. I started of with smarties behind the door so that the dog had to push the door to get them. I then rewarded it with a bag of crisps every time it closed the door on command. I then tried it in various locations, pub etc. without looking at or pointing to the door. It did it every time. So it knew what a door was. :) It earned many a packet of crisps in the pub.

erm, this may be a stupid idea, but sausage dogs are reasonably small right? So surely you could get her a saddlebag type thing, recordbag even, that the dog could sit in and she could carry it around the house and up stairs etc....if it was too much for her she could use it for purely taking it up and down the stairs with her...give her some exercise as well

Something like this would be ideal, if you pulled the flap back :)

very true, you often see little dogs in the wicker baskets on the front of old people's bicycles :)

What is the point you are trying to make?

The dog is old...as in 13 years old (91 in human years I think).

He's been looked after very well...

Leave a crossword puzzle book and pencil at the bottom of the stairs. The dog can occupy himself with this until his owner returns.

Honestly mate, dogs are meant to be fed once in the evening :)

No matter how brown their eyes are :P

But doggy crossword puzzles are a good idea. perhaps it could get a biscuit for every correct answer
