Downloading With Edonkey?

ok, im a newb to edonkey/emule and all that stuff... I downloaded edonkey2000 the other day and began downloading and obviously sharing my partial downloads.

My adsl is 512/128, and on kazaa i generally download around 40-50KB/s...

In eDonkey the highest ive seen a download is around 4kb/s and its generally lower... i have read some of the faqs around here about it, and have tried my upload/download speeds at 8/20 and 0/0 respectively.. Nothing has worked. I am still downloading soooooo slowly :(

Can I get some help with this please :(

Have Patience your speed will increase as you upload to other ppl and get credits, also leave edonkey on as much as possible and dont pause/resume frequently.

Edonkey2000 is full of spywear
Use overnet clean http://myimages.fourvalve.com/overnetlite/
it uses the same network and has alot faster speeds. ;)

junkyardking: thanks, I havent expeirenced anything with this edonkey yet.. no spyware, viruses. In fact I did a virus check yesterday. Anyways, I check out this version you gave me

edonkey doesn't install spyware if you uncheck 4 boxes during the setup process.

edonkey uses the horde system as opposed to emule's credit system. they both reward uploading at 80% capacity.

thats a true comment.

if you have more than 1 pc and you have a router dedicate one machine to downloading 24 hours day. - i have done that i have my windows 2003 server doing all the downloading and converting to create dvd's

download 30 files. all from verified sites like sharereator (http://www.sharereactor.com)

upload at 80% capacity

let it run for 8+ hours

if your HDD can't handle 30 temp files at 700 MB each then compress the contents of your temp folder. you have to have an NTSF file structur on xp to do this.

I would recommend this regardless of whether or not ur currently has the space for the 30 files. First, why use the extra space if u don't need to? Second, this frees up more space to make files available for sharing. The second fact may not increase ur speed if these files r not related to those that ur looking to dl, but these networks r all about sharin', aren't they? ;)

hey miner, ive been doing that yer :P downloading a lot of files at the same time, its kinda been working.

also how do i compress the folder?? i have xp of the NTFS thing :(

Navigate to your C:\Program Files\edonkey\Temp folder, or wherever you store your partials, then do the following:

-right-click on your temp folder and select properties

- in the general tab press the advanced button

- now put a check beside Compress contents to save disk space

when i first did this it took 15 minutes and freed up 4 GB. 5 months later it looks like this

Credits are what you get when ppl upload from you, its stored on their computers and will improve your rank in their queue when you want to d/l something off them. Switch to eMule or Overnet lite if you want to get rid of spyware/adware.

there is no spyware in edonkey as long as you uncheck these 4 boxes during the setup process.

hey miner, last night i was downloading photoshop cs at 35KB/s wow!! lol

i have taken your advice and am downloading around 30 programs at the moment and hence my lowest total speed is about 20kb/s but sometimes it gets going to around 40kb/s

its still taking me 3+ days to download a 700mb file, but at least its gonna take me 3+ days to download 5 of those :blink:

hey, that's great. emule will complete a lot of downloads every night once you run it for long enough. i completed 5 last night and 7 the night before that.

In an older version (10 mo or so ago) yes, which was why I went looking for a different mod. I haven't checked the latest versions b/c I don't use the app, but I'd have a hard time believing that any programmer or developer is above hiding stuff below the radar once they open their apps to spyware/adware. Call me paranoid, I guess. :D
