My disk cleanup does'nt seem to want to complete anymore
I'm using XP home. Everytime I run the disk cleanup the cleanmgr.exe
uses up my cpu. My computer is still fine to use during this process
but the disk cleanup stays at 2 bars forever if anybody know what
to do it would be much appreciated

Close all running applications in the taskman, then try it, i have seen it take FOREVER on my machine, like 3 Minutes sometimes!

do the disk clean-up manually

The same problem is still occuring. If I check my task manager before I run the cleanup I notice that my system idle process is using 99 on the CPU but when I run the cleanup the system idle becomes 00 and the cleangmr.exe becomes 99. I will try your advice again though.

I used Disc clean up on my home XP and now my computer quit working. The details are in the thread I started in Hardwareworld titled Big XP Problem.

Could be a read write error on your drive, run scandisk & do a thorough scan.

Thanks for the advice GRIM but it just so happens that just last night I ran the check disk for scan and attempt recovery for bad sectors and even automatically fix file system errors. Then I tried to run my disk clean up again and left my computer on all night. When I went to sleep it was at three bars, to no suprise at all it was still on three bars when I woke up.

YOU DIDNT SAY 'COMPRESS OLD FILES' was where it was stuck at now did you.

sorry, I have been up toooooo long.....I just glanced at your post and took off to find the answer.

I just helped a friend of mine with the same problem....I cant find the page though...It said that this was 'very' common on xp home machines.....we fixed it, but I cant remember the site and didnt want to take a guess, but for now.....we did something with turning off compressing old files and it worked.

Let me do my homework and I will get back to you....if i dont fall aleep on my keyboard again.

I did several searches to find the 'exact' page, but no luck; however, these tips advise to edit the registry.

I STONGLY recommend backing up this key before you do their solutions!

I now have the answer to this problem.
1)type "regedit" in Run... (in start menu)
2)navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\volume caches
3)open "compress old files"
4)delete all files in this folder
5)reboot
6)run disk cleanup - IT WORKS

To solve the problem where Disk Cleanup fails to complete the "compress
old files" option, run Regedit, and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Vo
lumeCaches\Compress Old Files

Save this key in an exported .reg file (eg, compressoldfiles.reg) so
that you can restore it if necessary. Remove all the keys under
"Compress old files" to get this cleanup program to run to completion

hope this helps,
Steve

I agree....executivesoftware's diskeeper is a very good program.....They are the ones that made the base for XP's defragmenter though.

Hope those sites help your Disk Cleanup problem though.
