I know what EXPLORER is (windows actualy) but what SVCHOST.EXE does in my memory ???And there is not only SVCHOST.EXE, there are 5 of them runing at the sam time.

One of 'em is usin about 12MB of memory (and some times even more), and Explorer.exe uses 28MB - 30MB od my memory.

Is the something wrong ?? :frusty:

And what are those SVCHOST's for ?? And why do they use so much memory ??

svchost.exe:

Application works as a host process for services that run from dynamic-link libraries.

explorer.exe:

The Windows Program Manager or Windows Explorer handles the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start-menu, Taskbar, Desktop and File Manager

Thanks {I}{K}{E}, but why are there 5 svchost's and is it normal that they use so much memory ??

P.S.

I have 256 MB RDRAM (as you can see in my sig)

bro, theres multiple processes running under svchost,

thats why it uses so much memory most likely

try either blackviper, tweak xp, or howstuffworks

i think one of them has a more detailed answer

I've got 5 svchosts running using more memory than you, I don't consider it a problem

Basically its a program that other programs need to call to be able to run. If there's too much memory going down the pan, try disabling some of your background programs to figure out which ones are eating it. btw - i have three intances going with 14.5mb in use total.

256mb ram? might wanna upgrade mate. Just get yerself a gig - you wont even notice that svchost junk then. :)

switch to a DDR :P

i can upgrade from 256MB to 512 for ~$80
or i could get a gig for ~$300

Then he'll need to find a new motherboard...

EDIT: Also remember a lot of people can't just go out and think "I want 1GB of RAM for my PC!"

My ASUS P4T Motherboard supports up to 2GB of RDRAM (RAMbus RAM).
I have curently installed 256MB RDRAM (2x128MB).And I would rather buy another 256MB RDRAM than 512MB DDR RAM ;)

RDRAM is fast as hell and I would never change it for DDR

P.S.

I've heard that the best performance you can get is a combination of a Pentium 4 CPU and RDRAM. B)
