Hdd Question

i know a 7200rpm drive is faster than a 5200rpm drive, but how much faster is a 7200rpm drive then a 5400 rpm drive if im doing stuff like moving files or encoding stuff?

im asking becuase i can either get a 100GB 5400 rpm drive for $66 or a 80GB 7200rpm for $60 at a local store....which one should i choose? this will be the primary drive for the comp im building

i need all the extra space i can get so is the speed difference worth the 20GB loss?

so in conclusion it is 2000rpm FASTER... :P :ph34r:

and i think there is a big difference....2000RPM!

yea its about 33% increase in speed, but i want to know is that gonna be notice in daily stuff? so its either faster drive or bigger drive.

i download a lot of stuff...including anime...so one series of anime takes up about 10GB. so im leaning toward the larger space hdd but i also do a lot of encoding and i move files around a lot so...

or i could just buy the cheap 80GB hdd now and save up for a faster 40GB that will have my programs on it and the 80GB would have my multimedia...sound like a good idea?

how much space do you need? 80 gb is big time :rolleyes:

Check the specs the 100 gb is probly 2mb the 80 gb is 8 mb

I would go with the 80 GB HD, but that&#39;s just me.

Just as important, and often more so, is the seek time of the drive.

At 5,400rpm, on average it will take 5.6ms to find the data if the head is already positioned on the correct track. At 7,200 this reduces to 4.2ms. At 10,000 rpm it is 3ms. This is true of all manufacturers.

But the seek time is the average amount of time taken to position on the correct track, and there are differences between manufacturers in this area. Maxtor claims seek times under 9.3 ms for their latest drives, Seagate claim 8.5ms, and Western Digital claim 8.9ms for the Caviar range. All these drives run at 7,200rpm.

If you really want performance, you should probably consider the WD Raptor, available in 36.7GB and 73GB sizes. It runs at 10,000rpm and has an average seek time of 4.5ms. They are a little expensive though (around £200 for the 73GB model).

Go for the 100GB, cuz you are not going to be watching those animes everyday, but GET a faster HDD for the system files... :music1:

To me that looks like a refurbished drive. :huh: I have a 60 with a 8 mb catch and I can see the biffernce over my 40 with a 2 mb catch. I would get the fastest drive you can for your os and go with the biggest drive for storage even if its only a 5400 rpm. If you can afford 2 hdd.

I was looking at one of the 10,000 hdd for my master...
