yeah, exceeding the alloted bandwidth just means that too many people are viewing your site, viewing your images or downloading any files that might be there

Forget Geoshitties and look for a better free host. ;)

yeah, i wouldn't use geocities anyway. The ad's there are too bloody annoying for my tastes.

'Bandwidth' refers to how much infomation was sent. Say you have a page with an image on it - the page is 5kb, and the image is 30kb. Everytime someone views that page, you use 30+5=35 kb.
But - if you have 2 pages with that same image on, and both pages are 5kb, you could use anything between 40kb and 70kb. Why? Because some people with have their cache enabled, which means that their browser will see that it already downloaded the image recently, so it won't ask for it a second time. Other people have their cache disabled, which means that the browser asks for the image every time and doesn't bother holding on to it.

The best advice for keeping bandwidth down is to re-use as much as possible. Having a different title pic on each page may look cool - but is it worth the tradeoff? Similarly, if you can have that menu on the side load just once instead of every time the page loads (frames), it's probably a good idea if its a big menu.

Edit - just checked the page. You had movie files available on a geocities account? no wonder mate. You won't find a free service that gives you enough bandwidth for that - might be time to fish the wallet outta the toilet, mate. :P

You have kinda missed out but ashst.com do free hosting. You need to be a member of the forum and sign ups only take place on a Fridays ... though a forum section for sign ups is open from time to time .... check specially on Wednesdays.

Good luck :)

Try www.1and1.com or www.flatface.net.

You get 500MB space and 5GB bandwidth with 1&1 and 100MB space and unlimited bandwidth with FlatFace.

but are they free?

yes
I recommend 1&1 also

shoutman

it says 3 years free. then u have to pay?

h1
01-18-2004, 07:01 AM
1&1 is free until January 19th UK time... wait, that's tomorrow...

After that it is closed to the public.

FlatFace is free, but the signup form is really an IQ test, so their acceptance rate is less than 5%.

You're not allowed to. Upload it as .html or something and when you link it, specify the MIME type. Or you could download it in binary.

Why does it suck, though? I was using it from 2000 up until now, and it was excellent for me.

They went down for two weeks in December because their DNS expired. Before that they were down once, and that was for two hours. :D

EDIT: removed because it fucked the layout terribly. Also, several hundred KB of RFC isn't cool.

eh u sure? wen i was using geocities i uploaded mp3s and zip files... they dont allow that anymore?

--- anywayz i say use 1asphost.com

100mbs
free
unlimited bandwidth
no adz

--- they dont allow a few extensions like .zip,.mov,.mp3

but you can rename then using cmd to something like .jpg and upload em...

shoutman
01-19-2004, 02:15 AM
how do i rename them? but will they still work when people upload them?

h1
01-19-2004, 06:04 AM
Just change the file extension. :) They will not work if you are embedding them in documents. Also, try ASPFreeServer.com.

I might have the answer to all your problems though... UUEncoding!

UU was made a long while back as a system for posting binary files on BBS's. UU converts the binary to postable text, which can be read in standard ANSI format. For zip files in WinZip, just go to Actions -> UUEncode and you can post this up as text.

for instance you want to upload a testing.mp3 file...

open notepad
save file as watever.bat

rename testing.mp3 testing.mid

umm well if you do this for the sound it will play the mp3...
if your uploading a .zip for somone to download they will have to change back the extensions

shoutman

i found another way o do it. I used WinAce. 1asphost accept it so i just make my files ace files.
