It is in Russia, don't have as many copyright laws or are more worried about other things I guess.

Not really. Russia's economy is so screwed up right now that it's mostly run by the black market, so it's not that surprising if you find a copy of HL2 or FarCry Beta there.

Most people on this BBS do not understand economics in Asia and Eastern Europe. Being Asian, I can tell you firsthand that things like this keep about a million families alive - and that's conservative estimate. I.E. - In my home country of Bangladesh, almost everything is pirated... be it games, software, shoes, clothes, Coke, etc. The piracy rate in Thailand is 97% of all commercial goods. In Romania it's 98%.

This might seem like BS that doesn't belong in GameWorld, but what I wanted to say that this is not the exception, it's the rule.

do you have any real evidence to back up that? 98% is a little too much for me to beleive....and my friend is asian, he went to vietnam last month, and judging from the pics he brough back and him, that aint always true

Yey! Guatemala is there too!!! Well it's not that much percent of piracy, specially because we don't have much reach to technology and new stuff, but yea.

There's an avenue ("the 6th") in which you can go buy all the clothes, radios, and whatever you can imagine, all cheap and with the tags off. As you said, it's how a country survives :)
