Anyone have this calculator? I heard it's real neat (and real pricey!!!) since it's expensive I'm pretty sure it can do alot of things right? Can it read e-books? Can it act like a PDA?

I have one. No, it is not a PDA. It is best for its statistical functions and some basic algebra and graphing.

Edit: no you can not read e books either.

lol, we use them in school.

You can put games on them, as well as other math based programs, but nothing fancy.

And no, it cant read ebooks. The font size would be disporportionate to the total number of pixels to the screen, so you would somehow have to scroll across all the pages and down.

yeah they can play games, blockdude is quite addicting....
nothing special though, not worth your money unless you need one for university or high school or something

If your a student and you use them in school as much as I do, then just beg your parents for one.

Mind bought me on about two years ago.

yeah they have ti-89 out as well, but most programs are campatible with the ti-83
and if you've got the extra money buy a ti-83 plus silver edition!

Ya my mom is gonna by me one I told her i need it for Grade 10 math

You can't scroll on it? What if you made the text files really small

and how much space does it have

No, I mean, the pixel count, would make even 1pixel thick fonts = only so many letters for the screen. Thus, it would be alot of scrolling.

Your better off getting the TI-86. It's actually cheaper, and has more memory.

Don't over use the transfer port though. Putting the cable in/out enough times breaks it off! After that you're pretty much screwed (unless you send it back, pay extra money... etc...). I know from experience. One more tip: when playing tetris, don't hit the ON button, it clears your ram  .

Keikan
01-18-2004, 12:42 PM
still do you need to fork out extra money for a pc to calculator cable?

fred devliegher
01-18-2004, 03:26 PM
On my TI-83 , yes, the cable was separate. And as far as games go , the best I've seen is an Outrun rip-off that barely ran.
Still , if you're just looking for some Tetris during school hours , it gets the job done. All those hours wasted playing Dopewars on a calculator... memories...

they tell you to put the calc on the floor during the verbal parts :P

yeah, the 83 (whether it's the silver edition or not) is not nearly as good as the 89. The TI-89 is much better. Also, the TI-86 is pretty crappy. Out of all the calculators that TI has out now, the TI-89/Voyage 200 is the best. TI also has a new calculator out. It's called the 84/84 Silver. It looks pretty cool, but it's just another remake of the 83. If you want the best, go for the 89. MUCH better math capabilities, MUCH better games, and it can read e-books (I think they're in a different format though). Also, the 89 has apps that are compatable with Word and Excel.

Go to ticalc.org, and look around. You'll see a clear difference. Just check out screenshots for different programs/games available for the calculators.

not here. i put mine on the table. then when i have a word i don't get, i write it in the math section. then i go back. i've done it once with the ti83 se. got myself a list of sat words, and used it. got a pretty good score

the silver edition is the same as the ti 83 plus except a little fast with more ram. if you just using it for school work the silver edition won't be worth the extra money.

Hitchhiker427 = The TI-86 isn't even close to "pretty crappy". I'm doubting it can read ebooks (im not sure though), but I did get Mega Man 2 in it's ENTIRETY on it, plus phoenix (extremely good game if you want to kill some time), and I think about 5 more games. In my mind, if it can pull MM2 off, with REALLY good visuals for a damn calculator, it's worth the $$ if your getting a TI-?? brand.

don't get a Ti-83 plus even though it temping.....get a Ti-86 or Ti-89 cuz they both could do integration. I think the Ti-89 could do double integration too but i'm not sure. but i know for sure both could do integration which is very helpful in calculus class. it cut the work down 99%.

When I said pretty crappy, I was referring more to math capabilies. The TI-86 was developed to be a business math calculator. So, for the most part it is NOT what you want for school. And, yes, they do have Megaman for the TI-86. Bravo, I sure do wish they're port it to the 89. I've played that, and it's good. But, for the most part the 89's games a alot better. Go check out screenshots from ticalc.org. And yes, pheonix is fun, isn't it? They have that for the 89, too, only it's a bit faster and smoother. Also, they have platinum edition, which is prettier and has more options. But, still, if you're a high school student, I'd say the 89 is the best, followed by the 83+. I still wouldn't recommend getting an 86 unless you specifically need it for business math, or just simply the games.

On the other hand though, I know some of my classes dont like you using the Ti-89 and such, because of all those extra things it can do.

Although, you can always get an Emulator for any of these btw, and use it on the computer.

Hitchhiker427
01-22-2004, 04:33 AM
Yeah, that is true. It's so powerful with calculus and stuff, that some places don't let you use it.

Fortunately, our calculus teacher encourages all of her students to get one because of what it can do, and if she feels that we should do something without it's help, she just says, "no calculator on this portion".
