what are/can dvd burners be used for and how much do they cost?

About £100, they burn DVD media, depending on what the burner supports.

so could I donwload a movie in avi format converd to svcd with tmpcgenc and burn to a cd using the dvd burner and a blank cd r and play it on my dvd player which supports svcd format? cause that will the almost the only use. also can i burn music with it?

u can convert it to dvd w/ tmpgenc and burn it to a dvd disc

about 2-3x the cost of cd disc...but surely you can find that out by yourself and do not need us to tell you

Also you can download DVDs from Suprnova from free, and make 4 gigs backups burning DVDs
