I recently downloaded a softwre program called Quickbooks 2003 Premier Edition.
I chose a download that I thought would be the right one (quite large) for xp? It is an exe? I think downloaded file looks like a white box with blue title bar on top?
anyway I tried to open it after almost 15 hours of DL time. it flashes a dos box and then nothing. I can';t delete it because it says it's being used by another program. How can this be? I don't get it. Also I tried to burn it and run it. that doesn't work either. I've searched forums, found nothing really helpful. Any ideas?????
I hoped this would be the right category to post software questions to. :frusty:

That flashy dos box its a FUCKIN VIRUS my friend , get a Free antivirus from here (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php) if you don't have one, do a full scan, get rid of the virus if you can, close your pc restart and try to delete that file.

I take it that you got this from K-lite.
You need to change the file extension from .exe to .ISO; .bin, etc.
Its pretty much a guessing game from here.
Just keep trying until you find the correct file extension that is appropriate.

It could be a cd image, in which case change the extention to .iso (from .exe)

There is also the possibility the file could be corrupt, in which case you may need to download it again.

But try changing the extension first.

EDIT: That was quick :o , both of you guys gave a reply to this as i was typing this message the first time. I thought i was going to be the first to reply

The white box appears when windows can't obtain sufficient info about the file (only with .exe), either because it has the wrong extention or because its a dos file (old type of file - pre-windows era).

Wow! thanx for the rapid replies!!
O.k. the first thing I do when I download a file is scan for virus. and then I scanned it again after I couldn't delete it. Why won't it let me delete it some other files must be associated with it or something cause I have no other programs open.
And I will try to change the extension, but how?
Forgive me for not knowing.
And thanks again

Open a folder, then select tools; folder options.
Then click the view tab, now scroll down and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types, hit ok. Now refresh the folder with the file in it and you should see the .exe extension.

Oh, BTW, I can right click on the icon on my desktop and go to properties. On the Program tab it shows a command line, is that where I change the extension?
Then on the same Tab in Advanced it says windows PIF settings Autoexec filename, [%SystemRoot%\SYSTEM#@\AUTOEXEC.NT] and "AUTO...."\CONFIG.NT
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

O.K. it's not in a folder and it won't let me put it in a folder again message comes up cannot move to folder , it is being used by another person or program, close programs that might be using the file and try again.

How do I change the file extension?

What is re starting going to do?
It doesn't change anything.

skelley521

Right click--rename.

xxxx.exe to xxxx.iso

restarting will close any applications that may be associating itself with the file.
Or Ctrl+alt+delete and close the known process that may be stopping you from moving the file.

:D ok I shut down and re booted, and voila I moved the file to a new folder, and I right clicked and renamed the file to "Quickb... .iso" and a message comes up saying are you sure ? this file may become unusable. I haven't selected yes yet. And if I do what happens then what do I do?

Select Yes, then go download WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com) and install it. After that if the file is indeed an ISO, you will be able to open it with WinRAR and extract it's contents.

@skelley521
He doesn't. WinRAR can open ISO files. If it is indeed an ISO, it should be fine.

That's because it is not a proper .exe
No worries ;)

Someone changed the extension to .exe so when you searched for programs on K-lite it would show up on the search.

Someone changed the extension to .exe so when you searched for programs on K-lite it would show up on the search. I just learned how to do that quote thing. And for this reason
It's a freakin trial version which is missing some file to install.
u guys are probably giggling to yourselves!! It's Ok I learned something. Any way Winrar would not open the file I chose add to Quickbooks.rar then after playing around with it VIEW and selected the executable.

BTW for future ref. which file types should I seek for a smoother download and install experience????

please help?????

skelley521

If the uninstaller isn't in add/remove, goto your program files and find the installation file and look in there for the uninstaller.
Normally its best to get image files such as .BIN; .ISO etc
Bitt.; Emule; IRC and Newsgroups are the places to get most goodies.
And no one is laughing, everyone has done it at sometime in their P2P life ;)

Edit:sp and sometimes the trial fixer is included in a subfolder or needs to be unpacked as well and then read any text file or .NFO file to get the instructions on how to apply the fix.

I'll look for an uninstaller again. It's definately not in add/remove. though maybe either the quickbooks web site might have info,, orrrr adware??? Thanks for the kind words I felt kinda stupid.

Actually it never installed, (support files missing??)
