Cdrw/dvd Drive Problem

I've got a COMBI RW16x10DVD combo drive (but the manual says it's a Philips CDD5101) on a WinXP machine, and it can't read audio cds/blankcds/Cd-Roms anymore, you can hear the cd spin and the LED will flash but that's it. When i put a DVD in the drive, it works perfectly fine. I don't know what the problem is, i've tried different CD-R medias and music CDs, but they will not load up. I've also re-installed the drive, and the device manager hasn't picked up anything wrong.
I first noticed the problem last week, when i tried to burn a CD with RecordNow DX, it kept asking to put a cd in when there was one already in. I then tried to access the CD through my computer but it didn't display anything and the CD just spun around while making a skipping noise.

Things i've tried;
latest firmware, didn't work tho the firmware was dated '02.
uninstalled the driver
re-installed windows
CD lens cleaner

This is my last hope before I call the repair guy :frusty:

Finch,
you seem to have checked this problem out , I don't see anything that
jumps out that is wrong. maybe some thoughts on hardware and software. :rolleyes:

it looks pretty decent

I did get a hit on problem with software

In general, problems like yours are usually the use of disks,
that are not capable of your units high speed ability.
(try a different brand and make sure it has your speed listed)

or this software is not right for this unit

or the software itself has been damaged

and last, I forgot to ask you....did you run a check for a virus? :unsure:

I have had this problem more times than I can count.
I've got it on my home system right now (it still burns though, but will not read anything :( , but since I have an extra drive I just use it to burn, and the other to read.) and I've also had quite a few CD-Rs come my way with this same problem.

Every system I've seen this on, it does one thing, you hear
Click, click, drive spins up, and repeat over and over.

I've come to call this CD-R Syndrome, and I've also noticed it seems to happen more often with combo drives. If anyone knows of a way to fix it, I'd be all ears as well, cuz I've tried reinstalling firmware, cleaning the lens, loading new drivers, and nothing seems to work. Only had this happen on a few drives that were new, but I've seen it happen on many that were a little bit over a year old.

Yes, i have run a full system scan with the latest virus definition.
I have tried different brands but it's not only cd-r which arn't working for me. All my pc cd-rom will not work, including the windows xp installation cd. This drive is only a year and half old.

Bob the Aliens, comments got me thinking that it could be a
dirty lens on your laser in the cd-r unit(I know you said you cleaned it) <_<
but another thing he said...it starts after a year this "CD R Syndrome"

tried to google various comments about the problem, it just may be that
if your enviroment is hostile (smoke,dust,dirt,etc.) or just plain overuse (not abuse)
may contribute added wear that leads to equipment failure---remember this rpm is high and any foreign substance
that gets inside acts like a sander on this plastic faceplate that cover the laser.

I think replacement may be in your future sorry I could not be more helpful. :(
