edit2: im also working on WU 858 which is a 2500, and is taking about 45min per percent, its huge, buts its worth 160 point. :D
What processor is that on?
I'm running 2 of those atm, it takes about 23 mins per % on my XP2500 (oc'd to XP3200) and about 35 mins per % on my XP1700 (not oc'd).
@FlyingDutchman: Better get ready to move to one side, don't want you ending up as roadkill.
its on a xp1500 mobile.
i think clocker better be getting out the way aswell?

Hey hey.
I was browsing about my bisnes about Linuxes etcetera and stumbled
on this (http://www.grid.org/home.htm) site.
I have no problem with this, just wondering how many projects is out there,
similar to Folding.
Must be few since SETI has been around for some time too.
Anyways, happy folding. Or Merry. Or Joyly. Or what suits ya.

yeah. enter tea, number 34905 in the conifguration. and a user name of your choice, as long as the name is taken already. and of you go.
you may also want to change the command swithes for when it starts up.
if you have a sse capable amd, add -forcesse to the shortcut and it will speed up folding, also -advmethods will always ask for gromacs core's which are optimised to use the sse commands.

Sounds about right...those 400 WU's take a long time...

I was looking over the team statistics, What I was wondering about is the pts. I see there is a page that you can goto to see what the worth of a package you are doing. How do you get these pts is it after you are done the package or every so offten? Im not really worried about the pts but it would be kool to see how I stack up against other ppl.
One last thing to ask, then I will stop asking so questions.
I was think about how to get my pc fold faster. I thought about running F@H in safemode, So I did. The #'s are hard to read and I only did this for a hour but it seemed to be a bit faster. Could anyone else see if this could work or not.
the points are credited when you return the WU to the server. but it my not show up on the stats for a wee bit. to give it time to update.
it probably will run faster, but maybe not alot, since it safe mode will be using less resources. but prob isnt worth it, since u gotta restart to use it/

 <_<
8ball- go back a couple of pages and read about gromacs and how to install them and they go ten times faster!

I have read over most of the stuff on F@H that I could find on here. This is what i put in to target line after the rest of the stuff
"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winfah.exe" -advmethods -forceSSE
yeah, thats right, you could also add -verbosity 9
it goves you more info in the logfile. also make sure you add it to the one in your startmenu/startup folder, as well as the folding@home folder.
edit: also looks like i may take the 2500th WU :01: got 1 with about 40 mins left.
ive got round to kinda getting a layout done for the site. http://www.livy.myby.co.uk/folding/
suggestions welcome, :P
also, i know there isnt much content at the moment.

Has anyone tryed running this as a service in win nt/2k/xp?
Anyways here are some direction on how to do it. It seems to work for me. Don't blame me if your comp blows up or something if this does something weird.
First make sure the folding@home Client is properly setup.
Then download the consol (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/download.html) version of the client and this (http://bscw.gmd.de/Download/srvany.zip). Make sure the consol client is working properly first (run it first).
1. Then make a folder somewhere on your hard drive e.g “c:\program files\FaH\” and copy the consol folding@home client and the two exe too that folder.
2. Then at a command prompt run this
Instsrv.exe folding@home “c:\program files\FaH\Srvany.exe”
The service name “folding@home” can be almost anything you want. Make sure you put the full path to the Srvany.exe file. There must be quoting marks “” if the folder has a space in it.
3. Using the regedit.exe goto
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\folding@home
The folding@home key is whatever name you gave your service in step 2.
Create a new key named Parameters
Then create a new string named Application
With the Value "c:\program files\FaH\FAH4Console.exe" or where ever you placed it in step 1
4. Configure the new service by going the Services applet which is somewhere Control Panel. (I believe it should be in Control Panel -> admin tool -> Services) and find the service you named in step 2.
Choose the Startup Type: Automatic (for unattended operation, this will allow the folding@home Client to be active when there is no one logged on) and set it up to logon in the account were you setup/installed folding@home.
I beleve this should work. Tell me if there is problem with the directions.

Firstly, it seems to use C:\Windows\System32 as it's startup folder and I can see no way of getting it to look anywhere else.
Secondly, I can find no way to pass parameters (-advmethods -forceSSE) to the prog when it is running in this mode, so it only runs TINKERS simulations.
Perhaps there are some extra parameters which can be given to SRVANY which will do this. I've used SRVANY before but it was a long time ago and I can't remember the options. I'll see what I can find out and report any solutions.
Update: you can pass parameters to the program by adding a string value "AppParameters" to the parameters key mentioned above. Simply insert the parameters you want to use as the data of this string value.
There appears to be another string value "AppDirectory" but so far I have not had any success with this.
Update2: I assumed that data in the "Application" string would need quotes if there were any spaces in the path, and it worked with those quotes in place. I assumed that AppDirectory would also need quotes. It would appear that the quotes are not necessary in the "Application" string, and do not work if included in the "AppDirectory" string.
The final settings I am using are:
AppDirectory: C:\Program Files\Folding@Home
Application: C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\FAH4Console.exe
AppParameters: -advmethods -forceSSE -service

lol lynx and ariel u guyz dont need to do all tht....
just download the FAH ONE-CLICK and edit the .cfg and put ur name...and with one click it will installl as a service...
(i use this for borging other computers  ;) )
LINKS:
To Install Folding the easiest and fastest way on a Windows XP/W2K machine, use the One-Click Install:
If you are running XP/XP Home/W2K(all versions) on a single cpu computer, do this:
1. Download the One-Click FAH Install (New Client and New Core)here (http://justa-larrkin.com/folding/OC-FAH.zip) .
2. Unzip the file to a floppy or to a directory (folder) on the desktop.
3. Edit the client.cfg with notepad and change "Wedo" to your folding username. Only use notepad to edit the client.cfg as WordPad, Word, or any other word processing program will mess up your config file!
4. Click the .exe file.
Poof, your folding.
To get other's to fold for you with this:
Download the zip file, edit the client.cfg using notepad, re-zip the file, email the .zip file to everyone and talk them through unzip and click of the .exe file.
or....
Copy the .exe and edited client.cfg to a floppy/cdrom/pen drive and give them to everyone on the planet (except me, I already have it).
You get the idea....
To Install Folding the easiest and fastest way on a Dual CPU or a P4 with HT machine running Windows XP or W2K:
You will do everything noted in the above section except use the Dually/HT version of the One-Click:
The Dually version, OC-FAH-Dually.exe can be downloaded here (http://justa-larrkin.com/folding/OC-FAH-Dually.zip) .
The only other change is that there are two client.cfg files to edit, both of which need your username (again, use notepad to edit this file). The client.cfg's have different names, but don't worry, when you hit the .exe after editing the One-Click changes the names of the files and copies them into the correct directories.
Win9x One-Click
Download it here (http://www.justa-larrkin.com/folding/One-Click-Win9x.zip)

It happens some times if the server is down for maintenance. As long as you can get another WU you don't have firewall problems. The completed WU will go eventually.

a tip here for anyone going to download a batch of timeless F@h tinker units. make sure you remove the -advmethods switch from the client when your run it to get the wu's or you will get a batch of the same WU, which are all the same, so will only get the credit for one.

If they aren't your PCs then don't do that.
not sure what's going on (in general) but OK
I'll use my own PC and check it out when I get back to the UK :)

Just a few questions;
1) Is there any risk to my P.C me running this? I normally leave it on overnight downloading is this roughly equivalent or does it use alot more CPU power to fold? MY P.C's not going to melt halfway through the night or die under stress?
2) If I wish to remove the program I can just remove it without any bits remaining and running after I have done so?
3) What is the information gleamed going to be used for? Is it just to be used by Standford University or the scientific community as a whole? Is there a chance that this insight into proteins allow people to perform nastier tasks (Stuff like cloning - I know this is DNA modification but proteins and amino acids often tie in pretty closely - or creation of harmful biological weapons)?
4) Is this actually worthwhile or will the whole thing be discredited in a years time when the scientists find there actually doing something a bit wrong and all this folding info is useless?
5) Are the pics on the user interface the actual pics of the protein being folded or are they just random images?
1. there shoudlnt be any risks with running it. just keep an eye on your temps after a couple of minutes
2. if you remove it, it wont remove everything, it will leave the work unit you are working on and previous settings etc. but can easily be removed by deleting the install folder.
3. not to sure, i think its just stanford/
4. i think its pretty worthwhile.
5. i think the pics are just random, although some of them do actually look like that

The Folding@Home client (console or screen saver) shows real time visualizations of the protein simulations being performed. The molecule drawn is the current atomic configuration ("fold") of the protein being simulated on your computer
:)
There are also many other distributed computing porjects like seti@home (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/index.html) (involved in the analysis of signals picked up from space) and fightaids@home (http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu).

WTF?
Finished a WU (p212) yesterday morning and got 160 pts for it.
Finished another this morning and only got 135 pts.
Why have they been tinkering (sorry) with it?
the points are more uniform now, so works out better for us probably, at the end of the day, everything is the same for everyone, so. :D
also the tinkers are worth a hell of alot more now. :D

hey there. i just found all this cool stuff & installed the program on my 2 computers. one runs 24/7, the other is about the same, xcept for an occasional restart. i plan to also install it on my parents' computer later which runs during the day.
the 2 comps are working on a size 400 WU each. B)
they are probably tinkers, they'll take w hile but you'll get quite a bit of points ofr them.

As long as the team number doesn't change (and therefore the stats), I've no problem with a name change.
FST F@H seems a bit of a mouthful though, perhaps we can give that a bit more thought.
yeah, the number will never change, but i can change the team name banner and website.
we could maybe have a few ideas and vote?

At last, project 638 has been given it's proper score.
I've done about a dozen of these over the last few weeks, but it was only given a score of 128. Yet p639 which takes exactly the same amount of time was correctly recieving a score of 239.
I reckon I've lost about 1500 points in the last month, although I don't suppose I'm the only one so it probably has not affected my position much.

A WU is a work Unit. You have a tinker work unit and it will take you up to 4 days to complete. After you have completed it, it will be uploaded to the server and after a short time your name will appear among the team members names on the team page here http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py...e&teamnum=34905 (http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=34905) Your score will be added to the team's score. Each work unit that you complete will be added to your name. Please read the guide at the beginning of this thread for more information... oh and welcome and thanks for joining our team!!! :)

Right click on the Icon, select Configure...
In Advanced, you can set the CPU Usage Percent. Turn it down a little if you find your laptop is overheating.
But if it doesn't overheat running 16 hours/day I see no reason why it would if you run 24/7.

If things don't improve I won't be passing anyone, I'm fed up of having my work lost by the servers, almost 1000 points so far since they introduced that so called "collection server". If I'd had those I really would be snapping at your heels.

I'm back on with a much faster computer. As soon as i can get my old one back up I will have them both going:)
But I cannot seem to get this new comp to use it's full resources. It has a 3.2ghz processor and 1 gig ram but it will not go any higher then 50% of it. Any ideas of how to get it to use more? I even lowered it, restarted then raised it back to high and restarted again with no luck.

Is it a Pentium 4 with HT tech? HT means it will only show it using 50% but its not really.

Yeah, I believe so. I can see it go up to 65% (when the task manager first opens) but FAH only uses 50% of it.
Either way, even if it is only 50% it is still a lot faster then my old one:)

Ok, from what I can tell, I have 2 processors. This is what the everest program tells me anyway.
I would like to set up 2 instances of the console version of FAH but cannot figure it out. This is what FAH says:
**Yes, you can. Additional processors must run the console version
(with the "-local" command-line argument if run on Windows).
First, make additional directories for each processor and copy
the FAH Console executable file into each. Then configure them
with the -config switch, filling in settings for each.
It is very important to make sure that under the "Advanced Settings"
option each copy is given a unique machine ID (from 1 to 8).
The first copy will default to a machine ID of 1, so additional
copies should be given IDs of 2, 3, 4, etc. Each may then be run
out of their installed directory, using the -local switch on windows.**
Anyone one else do this? I cannot figure out how to name each version. Where is the config switch? Where is the advanced settings in the console version? If you know how to make this possible for an idiot like me I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, does it matter where I make the separate directories? Or can I make them both in the folding@home folder?
Thanks
TD
Since your processor only has one Floating Point Unit, and most of the work is done by the FPU, you will see very little advantage. Pandegroup actually prefer that you don't run a HT processor in this way.
If you really want to run 2 copies you can do so:
You have to make a completely separate folder for each copy.
Create a new folder (call it something like Folding2) and copy just the console executable into it. If you copy anything else it may not work.
Now start a command prompt, change to the new folder, and run the console program. There will be no config file so it will think this is the first run, consequently it will automatically run the config. I've never found the need to use the -local setting.
It will ask you if you want to change the advanced settings as part of the config. The only thing you need to make sure is different is the machine ID - set it to 2. It will also ask you if you want to install it as a service - it's a good idea to do this.
If you decide to install it as a service, you should stop the program immediately after completing the config (press ctrl-c a couple of times), then go to control panel/admin tools/services and start the service.

Thanks lynx.
If I do this, then the only difference is that I will have 2 separate wu's going? It will not use more of my processors capabilities? Sorry, this new computer setup is new to me and I want to be sure I am using it to it's full potential.
I am kinda confused about the HT technology. Do I really have 2 separate processors or does everest just report it that way?
I can see 2 separate cpu's listed and how much power is being used by each, however according to HP I only have 1 processor.
Anyway, thanks for you help. Hopefully I can use this computer for good as well as evil;)
TD
You've only got one processor, but some parts of it are duplicated. These are the simpler components which don't produce much heat, such as the main instruction path, the arithmetic unit etc.
It has to report that it has 2 processors so that windows can schedule it to execute 2 tasks simultaneously. That effectively means that with two tasks which for the most part only use the duplicated parts you can get more performance out of the chip.
Unfortunately F@H mainly uses parts which aren't duplicated - the MME stuff and the FPU. These are complex units and produce large amounts of heat, which is why they aren't duplicated. So although you could have 2 copies of the program scheduled to run, in practice they would be waiting for the shared resources to be free.
There's even a down side to HT when you want to run another program, even with only one copy running. Windows sees that it has a spare "processor" which can run your prog, it doesn't know about the shared resources. So windows schedules your prog and doesn't bother interrupting the other FPU/MME intensive prog. If your prog uses the duplicated parts there's no problem, but if it uses the shared parts then it runs like a dog.
Nice one Intel - how to slow down our systems by not thinking out the problem. Nothing new there then.

Now folding!
Just started on my computer:
Athlon XP 3200+ w/ 512mb RAM 24/7
Will start with my gf computer tommorrow:
Athlon XP 1900+ w/ 512mb RAM 24/7
And in a few days when I finished building it:
Athlon 64 3500+ w/ 1.5GB RAM (will be 24/7)
I just had a question on the 64 bit processors. I'm using the newest version (5.03??) and I was wondering, 64 bit processors obviously pass data faster, but would are they eligible for the Gromac tweak i was reading about?
I read about 30 pages of this thread, but I can't be assed to read another 14, it was just far to much...
Also I read on page 28 about making F@H a process, would this work to spike public computers to run this application automatically on windows start? I've got access to at least 10 computers that run non stop, with little to no process power used for 90% of the time. I doubt the owners would submit to this willingly, so I'd just spike them to run as a process that runs in the backroung without making itself known... What better way to put all that processing power to work than to use it for such a great cause!

You may have a very simple molecule with 1000 steps, or a very complex molecule with the same number of steps. Obviously there are a lot more ways a complex molecule can fold, so the process takes much longer. But you should also get a lot more points for the complex one.

Ok, so it was a glitch I guess as the one that was gonna take like 20 years is now done, but I have something else that seems weird to me as well. It may just be because I've only done like 28 WU's, but, I just got a Amber Core. I thought it was just Gromac and Tinker... Oh well.
Current projects (http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html)
You obviously haven't had a DGROMACS or a QMD yet either.
do the dgromacs, ambers and qmd,s use different cores, just checked my install directory and i only have cores 65 and 78
Each type has it's own core, that's the very thing that differentiates them.
I've got a core 79 on one machine and I'm pretty sure that's Dgromacs. Not sure what cores Ambers and QMDs use.
QMD cores may use up to 1GB of main memory (source) (http://folding.stanford.edu/QMD.html), possibly even more, but they will only run on Intel chips.
got a core 82 on my other machine, dont know what that is though
That must be an amber. I think I've had one of those too.

I installed FAH over the weekend and a search didn't bring up this thread so I joined the Firefox team.
I've put that right now. Team 34905

If I could get my GPU folding client to run more than one WU at a time then you'd be worrying about me, but for now I have to manually restart f@h after every wu or it won't continue. :(
