hi all,
slight problem was wondering if anyone can help me with it... just recently noticed a sneaky little program called wmpupdate.exe running in the background, which i can only see in task manager...it seems to be auto connecting to the net soon as i turn the computer on...which is ok cause it saves me doing it, but since i noticed it the computer is running slower, and i'd like to be able to close the program and find out what it is... sounds like windows media player update, but i've run that separately with no help..... HELP!!! it just won't go away!!
dave.

Open control panel.

(if using XPstyle control panel, click on performance and maintenance.)

Click on System.

Then click on the automatic updates tab and select Turn off automatic updating. If Service Pack 1 is installed uncheck Keep my computer up to date.

Click Ok.

Also look at other Services you can stop from running-this site looks like hell but its safe - http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Sounds very strange....
Check if you have it, or anything elseweird listed in your startup programs
(not startup in task menu bar)

start>run>msconfig>startup tab> check for wmpupdate.exe on this list, if its not there,

try: start>run>services.msc>look for windows media update or windows update on this list.

Sometimes even when you disable a proggie or service in msconfig to not appear at startup it comes right back.

The problem is unless you configure the program itself not to start up its going to do it anyway and msconfig wont solve the problem.

For instance That little quicktime icon thing kept popping up on me at startup. First thing i did was go to msconfig and try to disable it. It was there and I unchecked it but to no avail. I had to go into the program prefences in quicktime and disble it that way.

Most program 's when installed like to check with the mother ship . For updating and so on.
So they phone home or connect to do what ? I use a firewall to stop that or msconfig to delete on start up :)

Figures it was a virus....
If you're using Windows XP or (God forbid... not that I beloieve in ... it....) Windows ME, the you should empty the system restore folders.

I would suggest going here (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html) either way. Even though I don't like Norton Anti-virus, I choose AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/), this page on the norton site is useful.

Because the viruses can come back.
