I think a great sports person makes you want to watch a game simply because they are there and even though the team sucks.

For me, that would have to have been Barry Sanders. I couldn't care less about the Detroit "suckass" Lions, but if Barry was playing, I was watching.

Michael Jordan is the other, I used to watch Bulls games simply to wait for those 5-6 magical moments per game.

Who the hell is Alan Shearer?

Anyway

Michael Jordan - got me playing basketball, he was amazing.

Barry Sanders - great running back and just up and left the game; very weird

Allen Iverson - coming out of high school, he was the #1 football and basketball player in Virginia. He was amazing in the Urban Coalition (scoring 40 points a game) then at G'Town U and he is amzing now. The new breed of basketball player.

Pele - probably the greatest soccer player.

Shaquille O'Neal - simply unstoppable

I like Shaquille more than Kobe that's for sure.

Shaq will have fun with the fellas. I met him in Philly at the All-Star Gala and he's pretty much a personable basketball player. He is monotone in interviews if that's what you mean by not very likable.

I really haven't had a favorite "Sportsman" in quite a while.

Brett Favre would, I suppose, fit the bill currently.

Barry Sanders was truly one of a kind.

My son was a Punt, Pass and Kick competitor every year he was eligible (age 8 thru 13, at the time), and, as the State finals were held at the Silverdome, he met all the Lions, and Barry, who was normally very reticent around fans and in public, chose my son out, as he was the only PPK competitor to attend every year.

The competitors would mingle in the stadium tunnel with the players just before the game and again right before the half.

Barry would stop every time and greet my son by name and ask how the competition was going. I always thought he was exceptional, not only as a player, but in other, quieter ways, and the way he went out of his way to recognize my son typified him.

For me, l guess the sportsman who has given me the most over the years, from way back in his Cassius Clay days, is Muhammed Ali. He is one of a kind. l really got a boost in the 60's when he refused to go to Vietnam, it was around the time we were throwing rocks at the American Embassy in London to protest the war. ;)

There are way too many indeed. One of the problems with Europeans and soccer is that all "fans" will pick a player from their favorite team. In that way the Americans have more respect for star players from other teams. They will see when a player is really great and even if he's from another party they will show more respect then europeans usually do.

Sportsmen that spring in mind
Michael Jordan without a doubt had one of the biggest influences on sport, sportsmanagment, TV coverages and economics. I think he was a great player that i enjoyed to watch. I often stayed up late to see him play (european as i am!). I think he is everything an Idol should be... a lot of sportsmen should take an example on him.

Dennis Roman for being so unique and controversial and combining that with being a great player with very limited talent (must be his eager not to loose..). For those not knowing, he was the absolute rebound king in the nba for many years, and one of the, not so visible keys behind a lot of succes (Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls).

Soccer, well i can't choose: Cruyff, van basten, Zidane, Maldini, Larson, Haisselbank.... Well if i need to choose let me pick Ryan Gigs. I always like the players that are less visible but without whom there was no succes (the players that makes that other players get the chance to become so great)....

Other sportsheroes; Wayne Gretzky, Lance armstrong, Ard Schenk, Olaf Koss, Andre Agassi, Ali, Joe Frazier, Alain fabiani, Ton vd Wiel, Ad vd Velde, Jan Raas, Eddy Mercks, Serge Boebka, Jesse Owens, Bob Beamon, Phill Taylor....... oh and many more B)

Has nothing to do with Europeans and soccer (although I'm not european). The problem is that americans don't have ONE favorite sport, but 3 (at least lmao): American Football (or NFL football, ey busyman ), Baseball, and Basketball ;)

sampras retired cos hes a great sportsmna, not like agassi, who cant get enough of all his damn money. sampras will always be the best tennis player to have ever played the game, no doubt about it.

allen iverson? the one who when he was 15 was sent to jail for burglary' aremd robbery and mugging?? wow, a real idol (as much as i admire his skills, i wouldnt mind having his skills mate, a great basketball player - talks too much trash and was a criminal...)

the only reason he won his 6 championships was because of his super car... without that car, hes a nobody...

Might be a conflict there, Tra-

Check out Jim Brown:

The baddest man to ever play in the NFL, and, in college, acknowledged to be the best lacrosse player who ever lived.

Bo Jackson: Football/Baseball-struck down by injury early on.

At 6'1", and 235 lbs., ran the 40 in 4.12!

I read a story where he ran it in 4.18-in full gear.

Wilt Chamberlain: His exploits are too incredible to describe: Basketball, track, beach volleyball.

Jim Thorpe, Daley Thompson....

The list does indeed go on. :)

I don't know if you're being facetious or not, but if you're being serious, think about the points gap between Schumacher and his team-mates. Surely if the car was the star then Schumacher's team-mates would be on roughly the same points as him (barring the very unoccasional team order situations).

Not a big F1 fan here, but with regard to Schumacher's dominance, I would imagine if the governing body could determine he was top dog due to mechanical superiority rather than merely being the superb driver he no doubt is, they would re-write the rule book in order to bring him back to the rest of the field, yes?

As this has not occurred, we are left with but one conclusion. ;)

I believe the Schumacher argument is thus concluded. ;)

nope...

the only reason there was a big gap between schumi and his team-mate barichello was because barichello had to let schumi be ahead of him in every race (except the one rubens won) so that schumi would have a higher point total... no argument there...

LMAO

Hyperbole never works :P . Rubinho didn't have to let Schumi through in EVERY race (as you suggest). Rubens also won 2 races last year ;)
The period of dominance Ferrari had was nothing in comparison to the Honda dominance in 1988, where they won 15 out of the 16 races that year.
There's no point in us debating if Schumacher or the cars he drives are the reason for his success, it doesn't seem like you are very open to reason.
In my opinion Schumacher is the best F1 driver in history.

everyone has his own oppinion right? so theres no point debating anymore :)

i actually liked mika hakkinen during his time...
then that fatal race where he led right through to the last lap... and his damn car stalled and schumi (what a surprise <_< ) took the race...

I agree, Hakkinen was a great driver, I miss him now that he's gone. As an aside, have you seen the 93 video of Hakkinen driving a Ferrari F40 and McLaren F1 road car for Best Motoring?
