I've freaked out quite a few people with this one. Some have come up with some pretty funky explanations as to how it works. Some still don't understand.

Tried it three times and it was wrong three times... the fourth time it was correct though.
EDIT: damn this hangover... it was just me... :">

It's an easy puzzle. I know how it works. :geek:

Don't explain just yet!

Here is the answer, don't highlight the text if you don't want to know it.
If it didn't work you added, or subtracted wrong. I figuared out how it works
When ever you add the 2 digits together and subtract that sum, you end up with a multiple of 9. So, if you look at there graph of symbols, all multiples of 9 have the same symbol. Also, the symbols change each time, that is why the answer is different each time.
EX.
Counting by 9
9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63,72,81...etc
11: 1 + 1 = 2, 11 - 2 = 9
32: 3 + 2 = 5, 32 - 5 = 27
59: 5 + 9 = 14, 59 - 14 = 45
I hope I didn't ruin this for anyone

this cannot be wrong. it always deliver the right symbol !!!!
if you want an explanation PM me.
theory of numbers was one of my lessons at university
EDIT: sorry about my poor english :(
Dwightfry did a bang up job in explaining how it works - but thats cheating!

Yeah, this thing is always right.
It ain't that spectacular because it restricts your choice to 2 digit numbers only.
Now, if there is one of these that doesn't impose any restrictions on number choice, then I'll be stunned. :o

it works with three digit numbers too. but then you had to make a list from 0 to 972 (min)
and of course it works with all natural numbers - only the symbol list becomes bigger
princip is still the same.

Yeah, but you can't make it work with a 1 digit number. :D

that is right
i didn't recognize that, because my email notifier was over the ZERO in the list, so i didn't see that there is a "WRONG" symbol.
so they had to fix this

did you not read what dwightfry wrote?
but if you like, i will give you a mathematical proof of it. and i am sure, then it becomes clear

ok .... i think it's time now:
let x,y element of {0,1,2,...,9}
then 10x + y is any one or two digit number.
and now we make the calculation they want:
10x + y - (x+y) = 9x ;)
the symbol list failed for x=0 (exept of the :-), cause the symbol for 0 is not changing with the symbols for 9,18,...,81.
so they had to integrate the symbol for 0 to let it work for one digit numbers too :)
now you are able to proof, that this works for ANY natural number :D :D :D
