The name means "to cum" in Finnish slang - literally, to orgasm - but the Orkut social networking service that Google launched on Friday was utterly spent by Sunday afternoon.

"We've taken orkut.com offline as we implement some improvements and upgrades suggested by users. Since orkut is in the very early stages of development, it's likely to be up and down quite a bit during the coming months." said a spokesman.

Believe it or not, this is a true story...

Orkut Buyukkokten, a Google engineer, created the site as a personal project at work. Google employees are encouraged to use 20 percent of their work time for independent undertakings, Rodriguez said. Google's news search engine, news.google.com, and its product search engine, froogle.com, also were created as employee projects, she said.
