here's a dilemma i'm having. i got as5 with this. from the artic silver site, they say to put a small amount on the cpu, and that's it. from ppl at extremeoverclocking.com, they say to cover they entire cpu core (square) with a thin layer. spread it out using a credit card. and they put a small bit on the hs.

y r they different? wat do i do? the comps i heard the sp-94 is a different from other hs's in terms of thermal grease. wat do i do?

just covering the core oughta be fine. you don't wanna be able to see the core through the paste, but make sure it's a very thin layer nonetheless. and try not to get any on the bridges.

i think that bit about rubbing it into the heatsink is an optional step which might improve your temperatures, or might not. if you put the heatsink on and you end up getting really high temps, clean the core with rubbing alcohol, let it dry, and try again. applying thermal paste isn't an exact science by any means. ;)

You dont need to cover the entire chip, just the core.

I personally, take a small dab on my finger, and spread it out over the heatsink, starting at center, circular motions until its just a small glaze over it, then I do the same for the core itself of the CPU.

maybe i should follow the instructions on thermalright.com? they say to put a thin layer on both

rub it into the HS with like your hand in a plastic bag...less cleanup lol

DO IT LIKE THAT, THATS HOW MOST PEOPLE DO IT.

Do it whichever way you want,it's a P4.They don't overheat, you don't have much to worry about. If you don't like teh results of one way,do it another.

well, from extremeoverclocking.com, most ppl with my mobo and hs and fan end up in the 20s for idle and 30s to low 40s for load, and that's after ocing the thing to 3.5 and 3.6! wow! i've decided to try the spreading thin layer on both 1st. if that don't work for some reason, i'll switch. thanks guys!

btw, any suggestions anyone got for this new system? wat ram timings do u guys recommend? i'm looking at sticking with stock till i really need to oc the ram. any suggestions?

Haha, they dont over heat?

Take off the heatsink bud, then turn on your computer and post that.

I was joking. They don't overheat the way that an AMD does.My XP2200+ took approximately 5 seconds to burn up.The only benefit, inmy eyes to owning a Pentium processor is the fact that they just freeze up when the fan quits.

As opposed to a Pentium 4, which takes how long to burn up without a processor fan or heatsink?

Have a little read here (http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20010917/heatvideo-01.html) and tell me if his processor will survive if the heatsink install goes bad??

i'm having a prob. u guys are saying to spread it out on both the hs and the cpu, and some other ppl are telling me to put a small dab on the cpu core and let the hs evenly spread it out as it's mounted. which way should i go? cuz this other guy says that spread it out will cause air to get into the grease, and it'll not perform as well.

I just put a little squirt on the die of the cpu and spread it around and then let the heatsink spread it the rest of the way.The layer can only be so thick. The heatsink will push any excess out,you know what I am saying?

abu_has_the_power
01-30-2004, 01:58 AM
i think that's wat i'm gonna do. that way there won't be any air in the grease
