How do i go about making an IDE hardrive the master, and an SATA drive the slave?
I want to boot from the IDE, and just use SATA as storage. Thanks.

With my (admittedly limited) experience with S-ATA drives, you don't need to define the 'master' and 'slave' drives. To the best of my knowledge, the IDE and S-ATA interfaces work independently of each other, so the jumper settings in relation to each other aren't important. In fact, quite a number of S-ATA drives are sold without a jumper bank on the back.

My current setup is as follows:

Primary Master: 80GB Seagate 7200rpm, 2MB cache HDD
Primary Slave: Lite-On 52/24/52 CD-RW

Secondary Master: 120GB WD 7200rpm, 8MB cache HDD

S-ATA0 (or possibly 1): 250GB WD 7200rpm, 8MB cache HDD

Thanks for the fast reply: but here is my problem:

I have 1 IDE drive. Then my SATA drive is connected to a Controller Card.

When I boot up, WinXP detected the controller card, but not the harddrive.

What motherboard do you have? When I was attempting to set up my S-ATA drive, I ran into a few problems due to the fact that the S-ATA enable jumper on my motherboard was disabled. Could this be your problem aswell?

Did you install the HDD drivers?

maybe i forgot how to do this.

You have to set the IDE to boot before the SATA in your BIOS.

Also the Windows installation will ask you to press a key (not sure which key but I think it's F2) to provide the SATA drivers. Don't do this just let it passed that point without pressing any keys.

I have not done this as most people would make the SATA the system drive as it would have better performance.

Have you thought about making the SATA the system drive and using the IDE for storage?

you should be able to do all of that in disk management

Yes but he cannot change the system drive to become the storage drive.

Vb1234: As I see it, he doesn't want to do that; I think he's just confused why the drive appears in Disk Management but not in Explorer.

Infested Cats: Have you partitioned and formatted the drive? You're experiencing what happens when you don't. Use Disk Management to do it.

Also, as Vb1234 said, the XP install doesn't load SATA/RAID drivers unless you hit the right function key as it starts - it tells you which one down the bottom of the screen. I concur that you should leave that alone and install on the IDE, using the SATA for storage

if it is showing up in disk maagement then windows did detect the drive.

the problem is that its not coming up in my computer but it is in device manager right?

all you have to do is go into disk management and partition then format the drive.

Boy I must have been really tired last night. I look at this morning this with a fresh perspective and see that Smurfette and ROSSCO_2004 are right.

You just need to partition the drive with the Disk Management. Once you do that the drive will appear in 'My Computer'

I just checked this. Its the F6 key that is used to access SATA drivers at Windows installation time (at bottom of screen when booting the CD).

@Infested Cats, this is not to be used in your case as you want the IDE as the system drive.

Ok, i got the SATA drive partitioned, and formatted. But Now, I want to do something else:

SATA is going to be my storage drive.

I have 2 IDE drives that need everything on them to be swapped. I'm going to put my one (which is currenly my C: drive) from the 5400rpm drive to the 7200rpm drive. How can I do this while preserving all the information and using the new IDE drive as the master...

thsi probably doesn't make sense... I haven't been able to think as coherently any more.

You wanna transfer all your stuff from one IDE Hard Drive to another?

I know my Western Digial Floppy that came with my new drive allowed me to do this, dont know about what other companies ship with their drives to do the same though.

This is getting into software ;) but you can use Norton Ghost to copy the whole drive over to the other one.

Move this post/topic if need be... but would you know of a tutorial that could walk me through such steps?

Thanks to everyone, again.
