Jack and Emily top baby name list

Jack and Emily were the most popular names for babies in England and Wales last year, according to figures published today.

Jack has now been the most popular boys' name for the past nine years, but Chloe has dropped from the number one spot for girls for the first time in seven years. It's now in third place behind Emily and Ellie.

The top five names for boys were Jack, Joshua, Thomas, James and Daniel, and for girls they were Emily, Ellie, Jessica, Chloe and Sophie.

In Wales alone, the top boys' name remained Joshua while the top girls' name changed from Chloe to Megan.

The most significant top 50 change in the popularity of boys' names this year was the rise of Alfie, up 31 places to number 18. The fastest riser in the girls' top 50 was Poppy, rising 20 places to number 43.

New entries into the boys' top 50 included Harrison and Archie. Harvey and Tyler became more popular while less boys were called Jake and Aaron and Robert and Jordan dropped out of the top 50 altogether.

In the girls' top 50, Freya was the highest new entry, up ten places to number 41, followed by Poppy, Isabel, Aimee and Ruby. There was a big increase in the popularity of Isabella and Daisy, and a fall in the number named Rebecca and Sarah. Jade, Zoe, Laura, Nicole, Maisie all dropped out of the top 50.

Among the up-and-coming boys' names not yet in the top 50 are Kian, Spencer, Logan and Noah. Among girls', the names were Tia, Libby, Evie, Eloise and Summer.

Less common boys' names that showed noticeable increases in popularity in 2003, but are not high enough to rank in the top 100, include Mackenzie, McKenzie, Flynn, Tyrese, Malachi, Malachy, Roman, Ashton, Camron, Ned and Xander. Jonny is also rising quickly in popularity.

Increasingly popular girls' names include Nadine, Honey, Tianna, Hermione, Kyla, Chardonnay, Fleur, Halle, Jorja and Sinead.
