I was wondering... does anyone know if the neon lights underneath cars are legal? I think they aren't, but a friend of mine says they are.

Can anyone clear things up for me?

In the Uk, I believe they're legal to use as long as the car isn't in motion (though I could be horribly wrong)
At the end of the day though, I can't see the point in them, they just look tacky

edit: in America, they're illegal apparently:

Hah! So I was right. :)

A friend of mine says they aren't illegal, but I knew they were. They're illegal in the U.S. because they are "distracting."
Tacky? I think they look nice. :D

Thanks for the quick info 4th gen! :)

It's a bit of a grey area as far as I am aware. I have heard various standpoints on this...

1. they are illegal if the neon led bar is visible, legal if the bar is hidden and only the glow is visible.

2. It depends on the cop that pulls you over.

3. certain colours cannot be used as they mimick emergency services.

4. If you have the colours that match indicators stop lights etc then you might get away with it.

As I said I do not know but you have to be careful, thesec are all viewpoints I have heard or read etc not my own.

p.s I like em too :) I have iem in my pc, 4th gen is just an old fuddy duddy ;) :P

In America the only legal lights are for basic functions of the car.

Brakes
Reverse
Headlights
High Beams

and must be basically of the "standard color"of each respectively.

It's actually illegal to have your interior light on while driving.

Apparently it is illegal to have any light on above the dashboard, i.e visible. :)

why is it illeagle to get all flashy with your car?

Rip The Jacker

Because your car will be a "distraction" on the road.

Bah! They other drivers don't have to look!

Another way of putting distraction would be 'easy to see'

I take it by flashy you mean strobes etc?

On an aside are top end sports cars not a distraction? I know if I see a Ferrari zooming by I have a good look? What about billboards, huge posters in shop windows etc are they not distracting?

edit my typing is getting worse :(

Its the same if your car is too low, or you have very wide tryes.

I think its really stupid that we have so much restrictions.

My cousin had a very low car and the tyres were very wide and he kept getting pulled over

Its not fair .

Also, if you own an import, you have to have a speed restricter and cant go past a curtain speed and if you try the car starts to lose power and cuts out. (sisters skyline has one )

Its not fair.

Their are new Holdens out with over 300Kw and they dont have restrictors on them but they do for imports.

ABout the neon being a distraction, Its illegal here to have one turned on while the car is in motion but ive seen a few people driving along with them on :)

They look pretty cool IRL

I dont know what the law is at the present time. In the sixties any visible light while the vehicle is moving must be a certain distance off the ground. Also you are not allowed to show anything other than a white light to the front of the vehicle or a red light to the rear of the vehicle. All lights when the vehicle is moving must be fixed. This means that using a movable spotlight while the vehicle is in motion is illegal. These laws are sometimes forgotten and it takes an eagle eyed police officer to spot the infringements.

The most common law broken by car drivers is leaving their vehicle when their engine is still running. If the police really wanted to they could charge thousands every morning when they leave their cars to go in for the papers etc.

Shit i hopes so :D

I cant afford a neon light so i will use fluorescent light

http://www.rosmanrv.com/arcticfox/slideshow/P49.jpg

Then a few rolls of velcro so it doesnt fall off.

http://www.ronlund.com/images/velcro.jpg

And my car that cost me $300. (well, i got it for free but it cost me $300 to get it passed the pits and transfer papers  )

I found a pic of the same model as mine but mine is faster because its red and all aussies know that red cars are faster :D

In America- 1.You can have neon's as long as they are not blue or red.
2.No lights in the interior of the car on the roof.
3.Lights on the hood are legal to(although very annoying).

I've had the wonderful (mis)fortune of having worked in the motor trade for the past 6 years in the UK so I know a bit about the law on visual modifications.

Lights/warning lights:

Headlamps: White or light blue.
Indicators/flashers: Amber.
Brake lamps: Red.
Front foglamps: White.
Rear foglamps and tail lights: Red and of a lower wattage than the brake lights to avoid confusion.
Rear number plate lamp: White.
Interior lamps: No requirment on colour.

Any other lighting added to the vehicle aftermarket has no strict laws applying to them.

But.......

It is up to the copper that tugged you what is within the law.
If you have your car lit up like a christmas tree then the nice officer may consider that to be a distraction to you, as the driver, and other roadusers.
Its the same sort of thing we had with using mobiles while at the wheel. Up until recently it was'nt strictly illegal but you could be fined under the law of driving without due care and attention.
The penalty you recieve may vary as well. In most cases you wil recieve a ticking off and a producer (a warrant for you to go to your local station with your vehicle and insurance documents as well as a signed statement from a mechanic that the offending articles have been removed/replaced) If your unlucky you may recieve a fine of upto £1000 and points on your licence.

In short if you must do this type of thing keep it subtle and make sure you fit an on/off switch in easy reach incase you spot the rozz. If they see you switch the lights off then chances are you wont geet a tug unless they're really bored.

Go mount it underneath your car so we can see what it looks like,http://cmw.dailymoviereviews.com/contrib/drowned/iroc-cop.gif then we'll make the determination on it's legality.
