geesh, you sure are picky, LOL

I'm the oppisite, there are very few movies that I would say, "REALLY SUCK", and there are very few movies that I would say are "VERY GOOD". Most end up in the gray area.

As of right now, the only movies that I put in the 'really suck' catogory are:

Austin Powers 3. I didn't laugh once through out the entire movie. When I watch comedies that aren't funny, I usually think the story line was good enough to keep me entertained, but I couldn't stand AP3 at all. It was the first 2 movies squeezed into one bad plot. argh. <_<

Fast and the Furious. The cars are cool, but that was it. Once again, the horrible plot just pissed me off.

Hmm, maybe it's just me, but I thought the movie was hilarious!

The sound of music I could argue that... not that I liked the movie, but out of the few musicals i watched, this one was by far the best - it did what it was set out to do and that is deliver good singing.

As for movies that really suck, I'd say MIB 2 was really lame, they just took the original MIB and extended it with a much less natural, less funny, and more boring story.

The Postman (Kevin Costner)
Fantastic Four (why did they even film this?)
The Punisher (you ruined my favorite comic hero at the time!)
Wild At Heart (when I noticed David Lynch just wasn't that good)
X-Files (to think I really wanted to like that movie)

That is my off the top of my head top 5.

the first Rambo movie was pretty good. he was crazy and needed to be destroyed, like Frankenstein's Monster. the sequels sucked... somehow they turned him from a psychopath into a hero!

Actually Braniac I think 3 movies came from that same set of Novellas.

Stand by me, Shawshank Redemtion and Apt Pupil, all decent flicks really.

Added- I know it was a miniseries but it really belongs here:

Stephen King's The Shining (the made for tv version).

Actually Stand by me ( written as The Body ) came from a different set of novellas. 1 of 4 short stories( if they can be called that ) from the novella Different Seasons. Apt pupil and Shawshank were also written ( as short stories ) but came from different novellas. I'm a big S.K fan.

The problem with Steven King movies is that they change them WAY to much. The most extravagent example I can think of is 'The Lawnmower Man'

I don't know where the hell they got the idea for the movie, but the story is nothing like it.

The actual story:

A man is to lazy to mow the lawn so he calls some company to do it.
A fat man in overals appear at his door a week later to mow the lawn.
The main character leads the fat man to the lawn mower and goes to take a nap.
When he wakes up he finds the fat mans clothes neatly folded on the front step.
The lawnmower is going by itself while the fat man crawls on his hands and knees behind, eating up the mulch
A rabbit, (I think it was a rabbit) goes out on to the lawn, and the lawnmower goes out of it's way to run over it, and the fat man eats the remains too.
The main characture threatens to call the police, and the fat man warns him not to.
The main characture tries to call the police, but the fat man makes the lawnmower go after the main characture
The police arive at the scene to find the main characture cut up into little bitty peices on his front lawn.

THE END

IMO, misery, the shining, stand by me, apt pupil, and definitely Shawshanke redemption are all great movies, but none of them compare to the actual books/stories.

Don't forget Green Mile was Stephen King too.

But to get back on topic, The Bodyguard completely SUCKS. The music, Kevin Costner, oh god it was terrible.

Hell, Star Trek V, compared to all the rest of the Star Trek movies really sucked.

It was nothing more than them letting Shatner direct his own movie, and it really showed. I wasted $$ on that one.

Compared to the TV-episodes most Star Trek movies bleach !!
The movies are a bit too pompous I think.
In the episodes (after the first few you see the acting-quality really pick up).
There are really some gems among them !! :)

haha yeah. the basic plot for all of the death wish movies was along the lines of: "racial stereotype streetpunks wearing tank tops & sweatbands rob/rape/murder/prank-call helpless women or old people... charles bronson shows up and blows them away with xtreem prejudice." i'm not saying that those sort of crimes don't happen, but the way they showed it in the movies was like a kkk member's wet dream.

I cannot find a film on this topic that I disagree with. (That is, do not think it sucked.)

I would like to add one of my own, and I know that I may be fiercely debated by including it: John Woo's Face Off. It seemed an extravagant misuse of two fine actors and a premise of great potential.

There are so many bad movies, aren't there?

Re: Stephen King.

I honestly cannot think of a single adaptation of one of his books, novellas, or short stories that has not been either great or at least watchable. The only possible exception may have been his own made for TV adaptation of The Shining, although only because of the desperate sappy conclusion. OK, maybe The Lawnmower Man as well, but somehow that doesn't count because it was so misadapted?

Also, to my memory, the collection of his novellas, Different Seasons, consisted of The Body, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, and Breathing Lessons. The last not to be confused with Anne Tyler's work of the same name.

The first three were made into films, and I would love to see the last as a short feature, gruesome as it was.

Btw, what is it about Steven King and prison settings? I mean Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile were both quite similar, except the latter added his trademark eeriness...

I totally disagree with you on the Tom Hanks thing. I think he is a fine actor and does make some fine movies, if my wife loves it and I get lucky then more power to him! Him and Meg have got me laid more than I could say.

As for worse movies, I would have to say the latest two stand out just because they are still fresh in my head.

The Hours with Nicole Kidman - totally will make you think about committing suicide when it finally ends. Just an overall downer of a movie about things most of us would rather not think about, let alone spend time watching.

Dana Carvey's latest "Master Of Disguise" was absolutely terrible, "my three sons" and I all looked at each other once it was over and stated at the same time, that was bad, very bad.

But overall I can usually find something I like from most movies. I am a huge Stephen King fan, but aside from Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption the movie versions were excessively flawed and just plain horrible. Probably the worst one I recall is IT, the book was fantastic, I read it the first time when it was new and I could not put it down. The made for TV movie was ridiculous and did not even come close to what transpired in my head while reading the book.

As for The Postman, I rather liked that movie, not for Kevin Costner, but for the idea and as someone already mentioned Tom Petty playing himself was rather ingenious.

Jeepers Creepers was a poor movie, however it was kind of cool with the bad guy being the victor and had 1 or 2 seriously scary moments, albeit few and far between. Most of the movie was totally predictable and that always ruins a scary movie, for me anyway.

I have to add one if not already added.. James Bond lastest film: Die Another Day is the $hittiest bond film ever made, the car is nice but the story and the acting were just crappy at best. i didnt even wait for the movie to end b4 i was leaving the theatre, i wish i asked for my money back, i might have gotten it, i was just so pissed it sucked so much.. i think that will be the last bond film i go to see at the shows.. im going back to sean connery bond movies, those were the $h*t!!!

I agree. Dolemite is hilarious.

It's super hilarious because it's so badly done.
Dolemite is probably THE worst movie ever made. The acting is some of the worst captured on film. The writing is even worse. Do you want to talk about the movie's production?
:D When watching Dolemite, try to count the number of boom mics that inadvertently appear in the picture. :D

Whenever something gets to an extreme like that (very, very bad), we will always find it funny.
It's like homemade movies. ;)

8 mile was a true turkey, and I suspect triple xXx may be the same, especially as they're having to give so much stuff away with it over here in the UK,"Buy Triple xXx,get such & such DVD free with every purchase", I believe they call stuff like that 'loss leaders' these days.
Personally I loved the 1st 2 LOTR films, but then again I'm not an adolescent with the concentration level of a carrier bag.

The LOTR trillogy is destined to be epic, and be up there with many classics... and trust me, this is hard for me to say being the Star Wars geek that I am...

Nutz... that quote from "dude wheres my car" was the only time I even chuckled through the whole movie... and it was at the very end, not good.

You know what looks like is going to be ass? The new Superman triliogy... the lastest, well the last one that public, script from WB was total shit, and Harry Knowles told every about it on aintitcoolnews. Luthor is an alien, no cape for superman, half the story told on krypton, with flash backs, supes dies half way through, only to come back better... so much more shit, and even worse things... i dont rememeber much, as I have tried to mind wipe the crap from my head, as to give it the benefit of the doubt when its finished. Heres is the link to the JJ Abram's (of alias fame) script for the New Superman Movie (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=13408), reviewed by harry & moriaty at Aintitcoolnews... read it if you dare...

i know theres more.

going back to remakes... i did like the new TCM... even think its better than the oridginal.

o & tom hanks....

well i dont think all his movies suck but anyone who dirrects a film.... & then casts himelf for pretty much the ony role in the film & then spends about 2hours talking to himself & his football, needs knocking down acouple pegs if you ask me... theres another to add to the list of hollywood rewriting "true storys" aswell :P .

Post here the crappiest movies you've ever seen.
Here's my list:

I know what you did last summer
I still know what you did last summer
Scream 1,2 and 3
Scooby Doo
Dolemite
The Blair Witch Project 1 and 2
Popeye
Speed 2
Rocky I, II, III, IV, V
Rambo I, II, III
Planet of the apes (All of them)
Battlefield Earth
Junior
The sound of music
Mary Poppins
Every goddamn musical for that matter. I hate those movies.
Batman (All of them crappy flicks)
Police Academy (The first ones were cool but then it just went on and on, and that made me vomit)

geesh, you sure are picky, LOL

LOL

I forgot I posted this. While I was reading it I thought to myself, man, this guy has the exact same veiw of movies as I do.

Sometimes i feel like ripping out my intestines thinking about it but if its on ill watch it because its funny :D

Also, i hate that movie 13 monkeys or someshit like that.

The ending just fucked it up for me. I hate shit like that.

Kung Pow is stupd to, i think its retarded.

And all them old western black & white movies where the actors have squeeky bitch voices.

Why the fuck do they play them on boring days, it just makes the day worse and you get the urge to rip your nuts off

It's funny how in every "worst movie ever" threads, Kung Pow always gets named, but it's always because of the same damned reasons. People saw it thinking that they were going to get something profound out of it, and rule the world or something, and didn't just sit back and let themselves laugh 'til they die. Same thing when people mention The Big Labowski and such, movies don't have to have a rock-hard plot to be good you fools.

PEARL HARBOUR- ye gods take it away

8 MILE- That movie really fucken irritated me

CANT HARDLY WAIT- Jennifer Love Hewitt at a frat party. I say no more.

BRING IT ON- It actually embarasses me that I've seen this one

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE- Pretty costumes, but thats about all

CROSSROADS- bleh.

HONEY- For a recent one....

TRAINING DAY- Overhyped and totally forgettable. Macy Gray was the only reason I didn't walk out. She was fantastic. (Oh god, was it missy elliot? aargh)

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN- I saw it today. So I'm freshly horrified....

BAD TASTE- fucking disgusting.

TOM + VIV- bloodless.

BRIDGET JONES DIARY- And anything else with Renee Zellweger.

X-MEN- I saw it for Ian McKellen. Thats all.

UNDERWORLD- I'm being harsh, cos it was pretty....but it should have been so much better.

QUEEN OF THE DAMNED- Loved Interview with a Vampire, expected this to be good.... nice music, thats pretty much all.

that'll do for now :)

Yo Gungrave, tell dorothy to meet you at the yellow brick road, when, you get to the end of it you'll meet a man, ask him for a brain. Those movies were so-so action flicks, neither too bad nor very good. If you think they are the best movies out there, then you my friend have a severe problem on your hands.

Oh i don't know, Ichi The Killer maybe, Fear and Loathing in LasVegas possibly, Evil Dead I/II, Ghost in the Shell, in all fairness though mate, i quite enjoyed XXX, Bullet Proof Monk, didn't mind Fast and The Furious, loathed swat but the truth is they really aren't very good movies IMHO, they are just brainless action flicks pure and simple, something to put on whilst you have friends over, drink or just relax. Some of the movies mentioned(english patient, saving private ryan and most tom hanks movies) even tho they may not have been the best movies are a glaring omission to the crapfest that is out there. My friends and I got stoned a few months ago and watched "From Dusk Till Dawn." Before we watched it, I thought it was a vampire movie for some reason. The first half of the movie was actually a pretty cheesy but decent crime movie. That is until all of a sudden out of nowhere everyone turns into fucking vampires and shit. It went from a decent movie to a B-grade vampire flick in a matter of seconds. Fucking blows...

Nope. You're a dickhead cos you seem stupid. I called you a dickhead cos I pretty much felt like it at the time. A few days later, you still seem like a dickhead. So you're a dickhead.

If you can't see how well that film was written, as regards to situation, then you're a dickhead. If you can't see how artistically written, as regards to the dross that was being funded by Hollywood at the time, then you're a dickhead.

If you can't see passed the special effects which were sadly underfunded yet became a parody of themselves and every other b-movie before and since that, then you're a dickhead.

You get ten dickheads out of ten.

Dickhead.

The fact of the matter is that besides you ,me,chalice and a couple of others nobody bothers to read anything more than the thread title and the post immediately preceding their own(and I'm stretching with that one).

I could live with that.

Clearly, I was being naive and altruistic.
Given that a large percentage of our participants are not even conversant with Citizen Kane, it would be a stretch to assume the critical ability to separate "movies I don't like" from "movies that suck".

You may recall that I am not a fan of From Dusk Till Dawn but I don't think it sucked, it just failed to draw me into it's mythology.
Battlefield Earth on the other hand, sucked on every possible level.

I don't care what Peat moss has to say, there is only one Lesbian vampire/horror movie the genius that is .......Vampyros Lesbos

Quote IMDB

The Citizen Kane of European exploitation
http://i.media-imdb.com/images/showtimes/100.gif

"Jesus Franco's 1970 VAMPYROS LESBOS is the masterpiece of all Euro-exploitation genres. You can swoon over the Greenaway lighting in SUSPIRIA; you can thrill to the comic-book metaphysics of THE BEYOND; a few solitary freaks might smack their chops over CANNIBAL FEROX. But the Big Mama, the 2001 or INTOLERANCE of the litter, is Franco's fever-dreamy Z movie, a dusted-out collage of St. Tropez glamour, poisonous softcore sex, platter-party lounge music gone Satanic, and more crazy zooms than the entire body of martial-arts movies combined.
Franco has made more movies than probably any other living filmmaker, and there's something intuitive and inspired in each of them. But in none of his other works did he so perfectly combine what he learned, in his zonked-out way, from his masters (Resnais, Antonioni and especially Welles), and his own lurid, kick-addicted, grade-Z technique. This movie isn't just for B-movie weirdos; hardcore Tarkovsky fiends might find themselves after fifteen minute saying, "God...I kind of like this...what's happening to me?"

Actually this movie is just for b movie weirdos. They use to play it all the time on Showcase Canada late on Friday nights.
I think I've managed to get through about 20 minutes of it totaled over repeated viewing .

If you want to see a good lesbian vampire movie I instead suggest you check out The Hunger(1983)Directed by Tony Scott and starring Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve as the highly erotic lesbians.
Plus there's the added bonus of seeing David Bowie gradually rot away .:O

Name a Ron Howard film that doesn't completely suck and/or doesn't make you want to vomit.

Forrest Gump had a good soundtrack but still made me want to vomit.

Anyway, Howard gets a lifetime pass as one of the developers behind Arrested Development.

No arguing allowed.

I repressed sputum several times during Apollo 13 during the seconds I managed to retain consciousness.

Maybe I have an adverse reaction to overly shiny things. Or maybe I just can't fucking stand the superheroesque (yes I just made that word up) spin Howard buffers his films with.

Not gonna argue with Arrested Development. Shoulda qualified it with Howard-directorial efforts.

Far And Away?

Yes, it should be.

clocker
10-25-2008, 01:20 AM
Well, here we are again at the intersection of "movies I didn't like" and "movies that suck".

Apollo 13 is probably not the best Howard film to hang your "superheroesque spin" argument upon...in many ways the actual true story trumps a comic book fantasy, and the three astronauts were genuinely considered to be heroes at the time. Still are, in fact.

BTW, you were perfectly clear the first time about Howard directed efforts...Arrested Developmnet was a McGuffin from my side.

Only thing that I hate is he puts his retarded looking brother in his films . Another cute child star that did n't age well .

chalice
10-25-2008, 01:37 AM
I'll give you that. I genuinely didn't enjoy the film. Perhaps cos I had no emotional investment. However, the film didn't provide me with said empathy either. I withdraw 'sucked'. Man, if this was the lounge, there'd be myriad possibilities there.

So, we've narrowed down Howard's films to one that is acceptable to not having sucked.

Next question...

Name two.

clocker
10-25-2008, 02:12 AM
That's not a question, it's a challenge.

Given that you brought no emotional baggage to Apollo 13- were you around when it happened?- and the film failed to engage you in the plight of the astronauts, then by a portion of my definition, the movie did "suck". For you at least, and fair enough.

I see lots of films that I don't particularly like but they don't descend to the level of true suckage until a myriad of conditions are met. Only a few make the grade and I don't savor them like fine wine, preferring instead to concentrate on flicks I actually enjoy.

Yeah, I'm a "glass half full" kinda guy.

Using your parameters, I could say that Gladiator sucked- nothing could entice me to rewatch it- but I must recognize that it resonated with lots of people, so it's just down to personal taste.
Or maybe everyone is just gay for Russell Crowe and I'm missing the secret handshake.

On the other hand, I think Chicago is a great movie but I'm willing to accept that that choice would sink like a brick here.

I don't think most of us see enough movies and fewer still think critically enough about them to justify this thread.
Not that it isn't fun to blather on from time to time...

IdolEyes787
10-25-2008, 03:02 AM
Only thing that I hate is he puts his retarded looking brother in his films .

Funny I would have said that the inclusion of Clint Howard is the consistent high point of all Opie's films.
Witnessing his devolution from one movie to the next is truly awe inspiring.

They should reedit 2001 dispense with the ape and monolith bit and montage that in instead .

Two. A Beautiful Mind .Solid screenplay and the film lacks much of the saccharin sweetness of Howard's other films (which I'm assuming is part of the reason why you profess to disliking them so much).

chalice
10-25-2008, 11:10 AM
If A Beautiful Mind had been presented to the public as a work of fiction, I wouldn't have too much of a problem with it. It's engaging and cleverly executed for the most part.

However, 'based on a true story' is a mercenary lie in this case. Nash and most of his relationships were completely misrepresented for the sake of the saccharin sweetness you mention above. By all accounts, the man was pretty reprehensible. He was an egotist and serial womaniser. He and his wife were actually estranged for many years and only came together again in later life out of convenience. They lived in the same house but led very separate lives. Instead we're given the portrait of a long-suffering, faithful superwoman. Simply untrue. If Nash was such a social misfit in real life, then he sure did alright with the ladies.

This, for me, would have made for a far more interesting script and I probably would've enjoyed it more if it wasn't so sentimentally padded, as is Howard's sickly wont. It makes me feel cheated and angry. True story.

peat moss
10-25-2008, 11:29 AM
I'm kinda siding with Clocker on this , I enjoy most Ron Howard films . Family friendly , good plot , sickly sweet ok but still great entertainment .

To be fair Peat, I never said I liked any Ron Howard films- just that they didn't suck.

Soldier (1998)- Kurt Russell.

I came across this film while suffering a late night fit of insomnia.
I want to emphasize the fact that I did not seek out this movie...it found me.
It's competition was The Postman with Kevin Costner- a film with such a horrible reputation that Soldier seemed like the better option.
Boy, that was wrong.

Written by a co-author of Blade Runner, Soldier is one of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen. There is so much wrong with it that a list of suckage would take longer to write than viewing the movie.
Suffice to say, the best performance in the film belongs to Gary Busey...that should pretty much tell you all you need to know.

I can't imagine the combination of drugs/alcohol that would render this flick watchable...resist the temptation to see it at all costs.

IdolEyes787
11-22-2008, 03:51 PM
Still better than the similarly themed Universal Soldier or it's odious sequels( the third of which having the rare distinction of one of the few movies I wasn't able to sit through the entirety of).

Or maybe I didn't mind Soldier so much because Kurt Russell's got a lot of karma points from me for Escape from New York and Big Trouble in Little China.

It's true that Director Paul W.S. Anderson is a hack to the greatest degree though and "I fart in his general direction"(except for Shopping but that one fairly directed itself)

clocker
11-22-2008, 04:43 PM
Fortunately, I've never seen Universal Soldier and will be sure to avoid it should the opportunity arise.
I can only hope Russell squandered his "karma points" for a really nice yacht or something- this is the kind of disaster that makes one automatically think "He needed the paycheck".
Certainly, it was easy work...he has maybe ten lines of dialogue in the whole movie, so sitting through makeup (which basically consists of a scar) and then looking steely for a few hours a day is the sum of his performance.

Soldier is the kind of movie that "straight to video" was designed for.
In fact, given the total lack of technical proficiency, I suspect this movie bypassed videotape and went "straight to floppy" instead.

But who would you rather except a ride from Busey or Nick Nolte?

Nolte's head is lumpy, but still roughly normally shaped, kind of.

Busey, not so much. :dabs:

"Still roughly normally shaped":lol:That's a ringing endorsement.
I'll be sure to add it too my next resumé.

Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest impression on employers.

Quite right.

I'd never hire anyone with a misshapen head - it's just bad policy.

Post here the crappiest movies you've ever seen.
Here's my list:

I know what you did last summer
I still know what you did last summer
Scream 1,2 and 3
Scooby Doo
Dolemite
The Blair Witch Project 1 and 2
Popeye
Speed 2
Rocky I, II, III, IV, V
Rambo I, II, III
Planet of the apes (All of them)
Battlefield Earth
Junior
The sound of music
Mary Poppins
Every goddamn musical for that matter. I hate those movies.
Batman (All of them crappy flicks)
Police Academy (The first ones were cool but then it just went on and on, and that made me vomit) :x

Can't remember more.

:D Add yours! :D

I haven't seen most of those movies, but the few I did see (Scream 1, I know what you did last summer) were good in my opinion.

I imagine Hombre has appeared in some of the most pathetic porn movies. That is, unless you are into seeing a simpering primate being humiliated, sexually tormented, and shit on, then you'll probably get into it. Come to think of it, he is probably as popular as Hasselhoff in Germany.

id have to put my vote in for "It's Pat". Not only is it bad, but its tormenting and leaves you that way.

id gladly sit through "You Got Served" to not see this piece of dogpoo ever again.
