Iv'e got a 715 mb avi file, that i want to burn onto CD. I know that I won't be able to make a VCD, but how do i shrink it down to 700 MB so that it will fit.
I don't want to overburn (I doubt that it will overburn 15 MB anyway).
I also don't want to lose the quality. Is there an app that will let me set a target file size and then shrink it down?

I had a quick look at tmpgenc and to convert a 715 mb file to vcd made it 2.5 GB!
Will muchspl2's method making a kvcd make it under/at 700mb??

if you use it correct it should come out smaller or larger, the mb really doesnt matter its the time. With muchspl2 method it will reduce some of the quality of the file so it can fit on one cd.

btw cutting is not necessary, because it sux balls to get up and change disc during the movie

Is 715 the size seen by your computor or in brackets in the properties of it ?

If the first by computer use VirtualDub to cut the end off the movie.
http://www.divxland.org/video_edition.htm#3

If its the second in brackets thats ok just burn,of all the ones I have downloaded only once have I come accross a movie I couldn't burn it was 727 so I cut the end off to make it smaller.

of course when you convert a AVI to Mpeg it will be 2 gig

Can can try to use KVCD I'm not a fan of it imo

or cut the credits off the end

and yes as said above is it in brackets??

because the first is to decimal

this might sound stupid but why not just compress it using WinZip or a similar program. its a lot less messing about.

LMAO :D

It was stupid, but at least you were tryin to help

Use the KVCD option mate as suggested by others. But before doing so make sure your DVD player can play KVCD by going here: KVCD Test File (http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2464)

Download it. burn with nero and put it in your DVD player. if it works you know you can use it and then go here for a guide: HERE (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=68852)

Battlestar.Galactica.2003.part.1.avi

697 MB (731,578,368 bytes)

this is the file size info, in explorer it's listed as 714.430MB
There's just over 40 seconds of credits which I wouldn't mind losing, as well.
to keep the best quality, would keeping it as an avi(PC) as opposed to making a KVCD be better?
If I do use muchspl2's method , the link to the KVCD Templates was no longer valid, do i need them?
I know! Questions and more questions!

Thanks for all your help!!

It's for a friend overseas, so I won't be able to know for sure whether it can play

I just watched last night Matchstickmen which was in Kvcd very good quality indeed very impressed, reason I got it was the down time was quicker instead of 2x700 files. :D

800mb cd'r are widley available from Cd'r Stockists and have been for some time.

however in this case i doubt he has any and if he gets some there is a chance his cd-burner will not support them.

ANYWAY get ya arse into KVCD dude. I dont know shit about actually converting to KVCD most of my film downloads are in this format and the quality is great and it fits on one disc. ;)

yea... i thought he just wanted to store it, not watch it directly on his dvd player. If he wants to do the latter, then disregard what I suggested.

Try burning it on a 700 meg disk, if you're using nero it will tell you if its too big for the disk before it burns.

If it doesnt fit buy a 730 meg cd-r, they're widely availabe and should be compatible with almost all drives. I have about 200 of them :D .

Thanks for all your help folks!
I ended up burning it on a 700mb CD as data.
I got a load of cheap CDs (100-£10)so i think i'll experiment with making a KVCD, see how it goes.
