I'm really enjoying the wide-open offensive nature of the game. Anybody who watches "real" hockey can see that this game is way different from that.

The players are skating in a manner that would get them killed in a regular season game.

Should hockey attempt to emulate this style of play and let the athletic abilities shine or do we enjoy the brutality of hockey too much?

I don't know which type of all-star game you're referring to, so it's difficult to comment.

Really. Hockey. Neverwouldathunk.

There are different types of hockey all-star games. ;) There is the annual best-of-the-NHL. There is (at least here) the annual best-of-the-best with legends such as Bobby Orr. There is the best-of-the-feeders playing against the best-of-the NHL teams.

And, imagine that, they're all hockey. And they're all different.

I didn't see it this year, unfortunately.

There does tend to be more of an emphasis on skating than on checking, mainly because the Stanley Cup playoffs haven't really begun yet, and it just wouldn't do to have your star player out with a busted knee. The skating portion also tends to be somewhat reliant on the lineup; European/Quebecois players are trained more in regards to skating than physical aggressiveness.
